Hello, my friend has a 6D and cannot use the fine focus feature when tethered to his 200L. The 50mm f1.8 works fine but the usm lens only works on coarse and medium focus, the third fine focus does nothing. Is this a lens problem, body problem, or user error? Btw hehas tried 3 programs which allow manualfocus over ride, same results on all three. Ok and one more wrench in the gears, his 550d Does fine focus the 200mm usm lens... The 6d will fine focus the 50mm f1.8 but not the 200L, help?

Is the 50mm also tethered?

It may help to specify which 200L. Canon has made at least 4 or them. 2.8L, 2.8L II, 1.8L, 2.0L, and maybe something in there with IS, also.

Indeed there are 4 total. The f/2L is the one with IS.

The only one that I can imagine giving issue would be the oldest 200mm f/1.8L with it's old school fly by wire AF system, maybe it's incompatible.

The newer f/2L IS maybe it could be a problem with all of the switches on the lens itself,. or camera menu settings for how those switches are used.

Let us know which one.

I don't have a 200 2.8L II. I mounted the closest thing I do have, 135L, on my 6D and did some tethered shooting. Everything appears to work the same with that lens as with the 24-105 STM. I had no problems.

Have you updated your Canon software since you got the 6D? Bad USB cable? Lens set to MF?

I believe the OP is referring to 10x, 5x, & 1X Liveview/preview with fine, medium, and coarse focus. I can focus and fire the shutter in all three preview modes.

Just to be clear, I meant the Canon tethering software, not the camera's firmware. Good luck!

I gotta say you are clever for figuring this out! :-)

I'm going to vote for user error. Very possibly the narrower field of view is resulting in the focus area at 10X not having enough detail to focus on, whereas with the 50mm there probably is.

No it has nothing to do with af, this is auto focus manual over ride. The lens motor is controlled manually when tethered.
