What did he put around the ring? I want this, it would reduce the effort require to turn it. ( I did basically the same thing with my ball head, but my mod is ghetto. )

The ring illustrated is a version of a Follow Focus Ring. Go to Ebay and search Follow Focus Ring for a variety of versions. Or you might be interested in a Lens Rim. Again, search Ebay… Japan Hobby Tool sells a good selection.
