Sure. "Macro" means it'll focus very close, but with the exception of Canon's MP-E 65 macro lenses generally focus out to infinity as well.

Of course....BUT like most macro lenses, the AF speed is fast enough for normal macro subjects and still portraits. The AF speed can be fast enough to shoot sports in some more expensive, faster AF macro lenses. Since the Sigma has HSM, it "should' be fast enough for sports. I just got the Tamron 90mm f2.8 AF Di non-VC macro lens. Originally, I wanted to use it to shoot cycling race photography but the lens just sucks at continuous AF tracking. It can't even accurately track a moving car!!!! HOWEVER, the AF is fast enough for still subjects and macro.

Macro lens is fun not just shooting macro stuff. They are great for shooting still objects or product shots. Here is my recent shot from the Tamron 90mm. Focus stacked. Otherwise, I could never get enough DOF to cover the Carl Zeiss to Hasselblad...

Most Macro lenses will be a little sharper, a lot people will use them for portrait or sports they also are good for low light photography and any photos that you would take using that focal length.
