Tim, here is another I worked on. I used DPP and brought the exposure up almost 2 stops, used the landscape picture style (one of my favs), pushed the shadow slider up a bit, strengthened the sharpening and set the WB as best I could.

I then edited in Photoshop for composition, noise reduction, and more USM. Here is your before and my after.

I think I would give the same advice. I would go to ISO 6400 and maybe 1/800th. The image wouldn't be quite as underexposed, and the motion will stop a bit better. I would also shoot a custom WB there at the game (unless you don't use DPP at all).

This makes me considered go back to DPP and GIMP (I know is not Photoshop, I am cheap :-D) combination... I been using DxO OpticPro 10 to clean high ISO and process my pictures for the last two years, or so...

Thanks TS. These are awesome edits. Next game I will definitely bump up my ISO and SS. Did you use USM for sharpening and contrast? If you don't mind me asking what USM settings did you use? Also, what did you do in PS for noise reduction? I always use LR.

Thanks

Tim

I use Noiseware (Imagenomic's product). I use USM for both contrast and sharpening.

You have to play with the radius and amount a bit to suit your view, but here is an article to get you started on USM for localized contrast.

As an amateur I've been shooting my 3 grandson's games for about 10 years - distributing the pics to family and coaches with no copyright or requirement of acknowledgement. This year (my youngest grandson's senior HS year), I put my pics online with Microsoft OneDrive and emailed links to share with anybody - so the distribution was larger.

Last night was Senior Night - I was surprised to see beautiful collages of pics, one for each Senior, that were 99% made from my photos.

These years have been a wonderful experience - it was certainly worth the cost of equipment and my time shooting and editing. After 4 years at one high school, everybody smiled and waved when I walked out on the court to change position... so I also took random shots of the audience and cheerleaders.

A couple words of advice: Canon 85/1.8 is a wonderful lens, and - be sure to get close pics of the coach doing his job.

The other night I decided to play around with my EF-S 18-135 STM lens and see how it behave for action pictures. Most of the shoots were at 18mm to keep the aperture at f/3.5. These are some of the results. That same night I had the opportunity to shoot with a friend's EF 200mm f/1.8L USM. Wow that is a beast compared to my EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II USM. It was very hard to frame action pictures from the floor, so I did the best I could. Thanks for looking.

You have a good eye.

I only use my 200/2.8 from the back of the bleachers. It's not as quick focus as the 85/1.8, but the IQ is good enough to do a small crop of shots of the far court so it looks like a sideline shot.

The 85 can also be used from the bleachers because it can be cropped 4-5x without losing much quality.

Two from the other night. The is the Catholic HS team from my little town. Th lighting was OK on one side of the gym. Very, very small game. I had nowhere to sit on the baseline to shoot.

It was not easy and these were the better framed of like 20 shots... ߘ

Some more from the 5D4, from the game between our local Pacers D-Leaguers against the Canadian Raptors 905.

Do most of you shoot landscape orientation and then crop to portrait, or do you mix up how you shoot?

I very seldom crop opposite what I shoot, and I shoot a mix of both. The desk wants me to send landscape shots for the social media/during game updates, but I like portrait views more, personally.
