Have only shot one game with my Sony gear, but was overall happy with the A77/Minolta HS 200 2.8 & A6000/FE 55 1.8 combo.

I've swapped the A77 for the A77ii since then, which is slightly better at higher ISO and has a much better AF system. As you can see, the noise at ISO 3200 is really noticeable.

My initial thought on the A6000/FE55 combo was that it was a crackin' baseline combo.

We've been eliminated by the Portland Trailblazers last week... Womp womp... :( Although the injuries to CP3 and Blake Griffin, in the post season, was a big blow to our team, we fought as hard as they could to stay in the game... Unfortunately it wasn't enough... Our season is done... As well as my yearly contract... Hopefully they liked my work enough to hire me again next season... With that, here's one of my favorite capture during the 2015-2016 season... Great job, fellas... I couldn't be more proud of our team!!!

:D

I'm in the same boat with T3i and it's a struggle with basketball, both in terms of AF and high ISO noise. 80D is on the way so hoping that will help with both aspects!

^^^you know, there are many factors to take care. first, if its a PRO league, the guys are SICK fast. so for freeze action you need at least 2.8 lens for shooting 1/1000.
i used 70-200, 40mm pancake, they work fine. the 50 1.8 is even better coz i can shoot at 1000 ISO, so i can crop when needed.
if you shoot non-pro, even 1/640 could be ok.. but the venue can be dark, so you need again more brightness :D
i guess 80D as last generation camera has fast AF engine, and you can use easily 6400ISO, maybe more.
IMHO, on non-full-frame-sensor over 10000ISO is too much noisy, need some postprocessing.

ok, just shot two of my son's games with my new 80D and had a few quick impressions (that most likely apply to anyone upgrading from a Rebel to a pro(sumer) model):

1) A helluva lot more dials and buttons to figure out. A little overwhelming at the moment, but I imagine will get easier over time.

2) The additional ISO selections are a godsend. Being able to set at ISO 2500 or ISO 4000 is very helpful.

3) The improved AF isn't a cure-all -- definitely had my share of OOF shots -- but felt like I had a lot more keepers per game than I did when I shot games a few weeks ago with the T3i.

4) The 80D's FPS rate isn't spectacular compared to other cameras, but even the few frames-per-second difference between it and the T3i seemed huge to me. I felt like I could get a lot more shots off when a kid was driving with the ball than before.

5) The gyms this weekend had pretty decent light so I didn't need to push past ISO 4000 to really test out noise/image quality at 6400 (and above). But his home games will be a better test of that.

it is not possible set AUTO ISO option on the 80D?? i find it a PLUS for sports, choosing the lowest shutter time and so on. usually i set @ 1/1000s

Yes, you can set it to auto ISO on both the T3i and 80D. However, I'm not aware of you being able to access certain ISOs
manually on the T3i -- 1250, 2500, 4000, etc.
