And the lowest light shot of the evening at ISO 25600, tracking the mascot's launch into the air... I was tasked with getting advertiser banners throughout the venue, so I figured this was a creative way to capture those that are high up.

Basketball is one of my favorite sports to cover, except some high school gyms lighting is very taxing on my nerves, not to mention the ISO capabilities of my 7D:-)

This is Latrobe High School.

You can run the 7D up to 6400 and use DPP to process the raw files. Run your ISO NR down to disabled, or take DPP and bring these 2 sliders down to about 1/2 their in-camera values. Run the resulting JPG through Noiseware Community (free version) to clean up that noise, then sharpen, add some contrast and saturation. Be sure to get your WB correct too. This will give you some more latitude in shutter speed.

Thanks for the info, but I normally can't shoot RAW when shooting sports because of the buffering. I tried it in the beginning and I just missed too much action. It's fine for HS, but if I'm covering college or pro things just move way to fast. I am going to pay attention to your post because everything else I shoot is in RAW and this image @ 6400 is better than my shots @ 3200. Most of my images are currently 2x3 in b&w for the paper so they are ok. I can't believe that is the 7D @ 6400 and still able to maintain 1250. Great shot, and wonderful PP! thank you for the info.

Understood, but the 7D actually has a huge raw buffer, if I remember. In fact one of the big firmware releases increased that buffer. My guess is that your card might be at fault if you cannot hit the advertised bursts?

Here is the post I did on the 7D about how to process its files.

Great action shots, I love the grit of the players' expressions!

Thank you for the info. I will have an indoor volleyball match on Thursday and will be sure to shoot RAW @ high ISO so I can give your workflow a shot. All my memory cards are class 10, but are 3 or 4 years old. I have not updated my firmware. I read something on another forum that it had caused some problems for some people. Do you know anything about this? I just go to Canon's website for the update?

I don't use DPP, this is Canon's software? Is "Noiseware Community" a stand alone program, or an action that is added to LR or PS?

I still can't believe that image is 6400! Awesome, this might be a game changer. Glad I spoke to you.

DPP is Canon's raw processor, it honors your in-camera settings, and also in some or many cases seems to produce better JPG results than LR, depending on your version and workflow.

Imagenomic makes a free version for trial of JPG noise reduction, it is a standalone app. However should you decide to pay for it, it is a plugin for the image tools you might already have.

http://imagenomic.com …ad.aspx?product=noiseware (external link)

As for memory cards, it is not so much the class 10 but rather the write speeds you want to find out about. I would use at least 90Mb/s if possible. You should be able to get 20+ raw in a burst. If you don't get the purported FPS that you think you should, chances are it is the high ISO and the High ISO NR value set that is causing the slowdown. There is no workaround for that, it is just the nature of the processing that has to take place. I rarely ever run a burst set for sports though any more, at least not sports I am familiar with. I might fire 3 or 4 at a time on a rare occasion or in some heated action (like a dunk), but most of the time, it is just a single shot of the action.

As for firmware, I always ran the latest with no issues. I don't believe it was the firmware that caused the issues, but probably differences in the firmware in how their settings were applied, etc if I had to hazard a guess. If there was a problem with the firmware, Canon would have issued a later version fixing whatever would have been the issue.

Here are some 12800 samples as well. These were more aggressively processed. Fortunately after the 7D, Canon redid the in-camera JPG engine, so the results are much better than previous models. Also since the 4 years since I have shot these, I have raised my shutter speeds, the motion blur is not very nice to work with.
