New 1DIII. Are my CF cards fast enough?

I just picked up a used 1D Mark III. Its primary purpose will be outdoor daytime athletics. The target is 6 years old. I know nothing of CF cards because I hardly ever use them. I am just wondering if these cards will keep up with the 10 FPS burst rate (I intend to shoot Large JPG, enough ISO to keep my f/4 zoom wide open @ 1/500):

Kingston 4GB 133X Elite Pro
Lexar 4GB 200X Platinum II
Transcend 8GB CF 133X

I know the cards are old, but so is the camera. I also have some 16GB LEXAR SD cards (633X & 1000X).

The 1d3 has a write speed of about 10mb/s , its slow, it will take some time to clear if you shoot raws.

Even large jpeg will fill the buffer eventually, i tend to use the second jpeg size m1 if im needing a lot of frames.

The sd card will be fine, similar write speed as compact flash.

I use SanDisk Extreme cards and have never had a problem with write speeds or the cards keeping up with the camera. I only shoot raw too.

I'd suggest: test them. Old CF cards hardly used could be as fast as newer cards as the onboard controller in CF cards levels the wear in the sectors so an old card could be as good as a new card thoroughly thrashed. In time your CF cards will get slower due to use but presently could be fine for your use.

Those who shoot raw do thrash their cards with the high rate of data and I think those of us who shoot JPEG will get a much longer life out of any card, to be honest.

Thanks for the replies so far. I was considering just buying a fast 16GB CF card. Then I looked at the PRICES! $50+ for one card is crazy! Why is CF so expensive? It is older technology. Supply and demand, I suppose. I actually prefer SD cards because of no pins to bend, and lots of years with P&S, Rebels, 60D, 6D & 70D. I picked up the CF cards I have because I sometimes play with CF-only bodies.

We used to pay $200.00 for a 4GB CF card... and it was a SPINNING HARD DRIVE inside it!

Spinning HDD? I bet those were easy to break.

Where are you located? Amazon has much better deals than $50 for a 16GB card if you are in the U.S..

Bourbon, Indiana. I shopped Amazon.com, and didn't see those. Still, $32 for one card is a bit steep. I have gotten 2 16GB SD cards for $19.

I am just going to see how what I already own works. Thanks.

When I linked it the 64GB card was $39, I see it went up to $47.95 now.

I see those LEXAR cards are 800X (120 MB/s). Can the 1D3 utilize that speed? Or would I just be wasting money? My old cards are 133X and 200X.

The 1d3 will only write up to a certain throughput (300x I believe), those cards are too hot rod for the camera. If you have some already, just use them. Every once in a while there are lexar and sandisk sales, just watch realness and MarketWatch here on potn.

Thank you. That is the advice I was looking for... even if I didn't know how to phrase the question.

The slower cards seem to be more expensive now, I guess it is because they are not making them anymore.

Here is an Amazon marketplace seller with good prices, all prices need to add $4.25 for shipping.
At of the time of this posting the 16GB is $26.70, 32GB is $30.53 and the 64GB is $35.34.

A follow-up, if you please. I spent some time with my new 1D3, today. Using my old 133x CF card, I was able to get 25 full-size raw files in a 10 fps burst. Canon claims 30. Maybe my 200X card will do a bit better. If I shoot JPG (Large, quality=10), I get 95 shots before I hit the buffer. Canon claims 110 (@ quality = 8). For right now, I think the cards I have are good enough for me.

FYI, I tested at 1/8000, ISO 100, wide open, HTP & all NR off, lens cap on.
