I've just come back from a group trip, and I am the designated collator of OPP (other people's photographs) - a self-appointed job.

In the past, I have had people send me their images on a physical medium, which I have then used to send copies of everyone's images back to them. That all seems a bit old school.

What sites are good for the members of the group to upload their own photos, and have the ability to download photos that have been uploaded by others in the group?

I currently use DropBox for sharing my photos with family and friends (I send them specific links), and I am reasonably certain that DropBox will do the trick. I do find it slow, however, and I would need to upgrade to the paid subscription (not that it's expensive). I'm just curious to see if there are better options out there.

Cheers, Damien

Flickr is another, fairly simple solution

Flickr is easy to set up. I wasn't aware that others could download photos from Flickr.

I use a mix of Good Drive and MS OneDrive. Massive uploads are not the fastest to any of them, but they handle things nicely if you feed them a steady stream. I find that it is either a "Go grab some lunch" and let things sync if I edit and export a large batch, or export a handful of photos to let sync while I continue editing others kind of thing.

Works easily enough for me.

Our high school sports team parents do Dropbox, but I have a professional smugmug account that I do for my business, as well as for personal use. I put a password on the ones that have kids under 14. But that's how the parents get the pictures from me. It's been very good and I have set up copy and download, but some people print from the site.

Since you want everyone to be able to upload their own images, and download anyone else's, I suspect the regular photo-sharing sites won't work. They generally want to have one person (or a person and their "assistant/s") posting, with others viewing. Possibly, with a shared password, you could work around that but it could well be a violation of their terms of service. DropBox would let everyone up-and down-load, although it might not be intuitively obvious to everyone how to see the pictures before downloading them. If all of you created and shared DropBox folders with each other, you might be able to avoid buying space, as opposed to buying one set of space and opening it to everyone else to upload/download to..

Jon,
Do you know of any web-accessible NAS products, where you can provide a specific password-protected web address, which goes directly to a mass storage unit (not a storage service on the Cloud)? I have thought I might want to set something like that up for myself, for access to business files I might need while on the road, and that kind of access would be usable for group use as well.

Directly accessible, you could build a server people could then log in to, but you'd also need a reasonably static IP address out front and you'd need to configure your home network so people couldn't get at any other devices you have on the network. If you're willing to let someone else handle the access control, Western Digital's MyCloud or Seagate's Personal Cloud hard drives can do that for you, although the web interface can be a bit clunky. I've tried providing people (local press reporting on plays I had photos for) with access and links and ended up having to just send them the pictures since they couldn't/wouldn't take the time to connect and download the pictures. They're also somewhat limited in that you can't (or couldn't when I got them) have 2 of the same company's device on your local network and expect them to play nicely together.

Thx, Jon...in brief. it seems that a turnkey solution really does not exist.

If you have smugmug you can create a gallery and an upload address that anyone can upload to. Once uploaded it's easy to rearrange the images if you want and allow anyone to download individual images or the entire gallery.
