I am going from a 50 D to a 5DmkIII. There are a lot of settings changes. I don't know if I changed some setting that turned off the dial just behind the shutter release, Or if camera is broken. It was working, now it is not. I have gone through all the settings and i can't see a mode that causes the dial to stop working. Please advise me what I hit to turn that dial off.

Thanks!

Are you using a grip on the camera?

Yes, I took the grip off last night and the dial started working. Is this typical of grips?

No just typical of defective or mis-seated grips.

Often the wheel/dial on the grip is sitting halfway between clicks. This will block any communication from the wheel on top of the camera until you turn the wheel on the grip into position. Hopefully that's all it is.

^^^^THIS.

Make sure that dials(grip and camera) are firmly on a click-stop. If one is lodged between two click-stops then neither dial will work.
