I'm using a EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM and love it... well, in good light. Problem is that I am shooting with a 7D2, and when filming wedding receptions, f/4.5 really is hard to deal with.

I think I may need something faster; but want to have something ultra wide still. I owned the 16-35L II; but I am really wanting something 10/12mm at least. I had the 20mm 2.8 as well. Just not wide enough for my 7D2.

Any recommendations on something that may work better for me in low light? and will still give me nice quality?

Thanks!

The original 10-22 is a stop faster at 3.5-4.5, but that's not a ton (Sigma and Tamron offer similar speeds in similar packages. That field tops out at 2.8, currently, with Tokina having a couple versions of an 11-16 2.8 and I *think* one or two others might provide one, but it's a pretty limited stable.

The tokinas 11-16,11-16 II, and 11-20 are all 2.8 but are all noisy focusers. You will want an external mic for sure. There is also a new Tokina 14-20/2.0 but again noisy focus motor. Samyang has a manual focus and manual aperture 10/2.8 and a 14/2.8. There is supposed to be a new Laowa 12/2.8 this summer but it's full manual like the Samyang.

Sigma has the constant aperture 10-20/3.5

The focus on the 10-18 is really good. I do have a Rode ext mike, so maybe I need to try one of the tokinas. I had looked at them when I was looking at my current lens. Just never tried one.

With an ultrawide, even at f2.8, the dof is quite large. You may not need autofocus, and might just want to put the lens in MF mode. You can make a slight focusing adjustment yourself if needed.

Seriously?

How about kicking your camera's ISO to 16000!

Plus your 10-18mm STM is the only ultrawide with image stabilization.

The fastest ultrawide is Tokina 11-20/2.8. I haven't used it yet, but the lens it superseded - Tokina 11-16/2.8 - was rather prone to flare. I have heard that the new lens is better controlling flare, but it's also a lot larger and heavier (needs 82mm filters, too).

f2.8 is the fastest you'll find. 1.33 stops faster than the f4.5 of your current lens.

Canon 10-22mm USM is f3.5 at the wide end, highly resistant to flare (and uses 77mm filters). That's .66 stops faster than what you've got.

You mention "filming"... which suggests videography, rather than stills. If so, it's going to be hard to beat your STM lens. Neither the Tokina nor the Canon 10-22mm have that.

I doubt flare becomes much an issue when videoing a wedding reception, unless it is outside with the sun at an angle that causes the flare.

I use my 11-16/2.8 shooting bands in pretty low-light clubs as my ultra-wide, in addition to a 35/2IS, and 58/2. At 1/30s, f/2.8, and ISO 3200 or 6400 on my 7D, I'm happy with the results. Your 7DII will do even better with higher ISO, so it should work for you. If you AF in video, your STM will work a good bit better, but I MF exclusively while shooting video.

Best regards,

Jason

Do you have the 11-16 ver 1 or 2?

I appreciate the advise! I just sometimes struggle with the 4.5 stop, even going very hi ISO.

I've got the first version. I can't say I even know what the difference is with the second one.

For canon, version 2 came with a new coating to help with glare reduction. The Nikon version had more internal mechanical changes too.

Another vote on Tokina 11-16 F2.8, specially now that prices are significantly decreased.
