You guys that own both bodies are the ones that can answer the question..take some bounced flash shots indoors with the two bodies...try and keep everything the same so the only variable is the body

^^ This. And then show us the images. Now I'm interested as well. I have no desire to buy the 80D, as I have even more camera's than the person a few posts back so I have no need for yet another camera, but I'd like to know if the issue is addressed. I did own the 70D, and it did have the bounced flash issue. In every other way for me, it was a stellar camera, and I passed it on to a friend who uses it for video.

I agree with WilsonFlyer. The provenance of the issue is resolved. The thread will stay more relevant if we keep to the original issue: 80 & bounce flash. I don't have an 80D. I will reading along for reference.

^ and now that this is May 13, and BlakeC was going try to do testing today (according to his post), we can all wait with bated breath to hear the outcome!

I will seriously consider the 80D still regardless if it has a potential bounced flash issue. I'll be using it as a video camera and available light shooting anyways. If it truly has an issue that certainly is a big disappointment though......

I'll still be lurking to see how this camera does in bounced flash situations. In the meantime my panasonic gh3 is doing acceptably well as a video camera.

So i had an hour to do some testing
Disclaimers:
* i only have the 80D- so i could not compare to 70D
* i use flash occasionally only - so i am not an expert
* because of limited time my set up was basic (using my leaving room with window closed)

the setup - no flash no EC. iso 6400 Av 5.0 Tv 1//10 (not so sharp - but expose seem OK - also by Histogram)

my initial conclusion - when Flash is in evaluative mode it seems to be about 0.5 stop darker than proper exposure, however when flash is on Average metering the exposure is about right (may be a 1/3 darker)

i did try to use Flash EC - any value above +1/3 would clip the white highlights (the wall above the picture)

It is far from being scientific - but it was fun to do

For me i am not worried as using Average Flash metering is easy enough

My experience with any camera I've ever used is diametrically opposed to these findings. The photos are darker with flash. Ettl should not behave this way.

I am not sure i get your point as my finding confirms that it is darker with flash

I've used Average ETTL settings for my 5dmk2 and 5dmk3. I did not like the results I got bouncing flash with Evaluative. I guess the 80D follows the same trend I'm use too.

I'm saying that every camera I've ever used has fven better more correctly exposed photos with h ettl flash than without in darker situations. Sorry for the confusion.

I just thought I would offer this 40D series as a 'control' against which to judge 70D and 80D...

For reference: Scene is my family room, the couch is about same as 18% grey tonality and the stuffed animal subject is about my skin tone tonality.

The test series is comprised of these shots (all ISO 400), flash is Metz 54MZ-4, roughly equivalent to 580EXII

  1. Ambient light only, Evaluative metering pattern, Av mode, 1/60 f/2.8
  2. Auto photosensor mode flash direct, M mode, 1/200 f/2.8
  3. Auto photosensor mode flash bounce flash, M mode, 1/200 f/2.8
  4. ETTL Evaluative mode flash direct, M mode, 1/200 f/2.8
  5. ETTL Average mode flash direct, M mode, 1/200 f/2.8
  6. ETTL Evaluative mode flash bounce flash, M mode, 1/200 f/2.8
  7. ETTL Average mode flash bounce flash, M mode, 1/200 f/2.8

IMAGE: http://i69.photobucket.com/albums/i63/wiltonw/Principles/40D%20flash%20compare_zps3w4kgu5l.jpg

One can see that with flash Evaluative it is a bit darker on the direct flash and bounce flash shots, but both are not much different from ambient-only shot!

I suggest a comparable series, when folks shoot tests with the 70D and/or 80D, to judge flash exposure accuracy.
