I can use DPP to edit images stored on my C: drive in either Editor Module mode, or Viewer Module mode.

I copied my images from C: to an external drive E: using SyncToy. The process worked well - no problems.
But when I try to edit images from drive E, I can only enter Viewer Module mode. Editor Module mode won't work,
the images won't load into DPP even if I choose Editor mode as the default program.

Strange, Editor mode no longer works with images from drive E.
Any ideas?

Everything works normally here, using Windows XP, DPP 3.14.15 and a My Book external USB drive.

No problem for me neither. I have my pics on a network drive and no problem to access and modify them.
May be it's a writing access permission problem ???

My guess would be that Synctoy which I think is a backup program for windows, will have by default created the files as read only. That would be a problem for DPP because unlike any other RAW processor, although it doesn't change the actual RAW data it does store the edit data in the .CR2 file itself. So it will need write access to the file, not just read access like any other RAW converter would need.

When you say "the images won't load into DPP even if I choose Editor mode as the default program", are you saying that you can view them in DPP, but not edit, or you can't open them in DPP to view them?

Try to update the external drive's driver (preferably one issued by the external drive's manufacturer - rather than the one supplied automatically by Microsoft).

I can't open them in DPP to view them. I can only open them in DPP if I select Viewer mode.

Thanks Alan, you might be on to something.
I went back to SyncToy and looked at my copy settings. I had the backup set to exclude hidden files and system files. Maybe some of these files are necessary for DPP to run in the Edit module mode. I'll have to run SyncToy again with these file enabled and see if it makes a difference

Update...

It's back to normal now. I can access the images on the external drive (E) in Editor mode using DPP,
just as with drive C.

I don't know what the fix was, but the problem cleared after I cycled my pc off/on and unplugged/plugged in
the USB cable to the external drive dock.
