A few shots I grabbed at the recent Warbirds over Wanaka airshow at Easter time.

All shot with a Nikon D610 and Tamron 150-600mm. Such a long lens at such slow shutter speeds proved to be a real problem.

Good ones. The Corsair has the amount of prop-blur I like.

Thanks, I've got a few more if you want me to post them?

I took over 1200 photos on the day... never have taken so many on a single day.

Does your Tamron have the Firmware update that allows you to keep the VC on while panning at low shutter speeds? I would not want to be at 1/160 and 600mm panning without image stabilisation. I usually limit my shutter to 1/160 for prop aircraft. When I tried the Tamron back in 2014 I left the VC on and it was a real nightmare. In a way I am pleased that the show was badly affected by weather. To have lost almost all of my shots of some fairly unrepeatable moments would have been sickening. Although they now have the Tamron auto switch I don't know how effective the VC system is in reducing off axis vibration.

I ended up getting the Sigma 150-600 C, and I was very very happy with the results I got at the last show of the British season last October. I have to say that I also went back to using a shoulder pod type support, with a pistol grip at the front end for the right hand with the shutter remote gaffer taped to it. That left the left hand free for zooming. I got lots of shots that I was more than happy with shooting at 600mm 1/160. Actually given the safety distances at British airshows, which are a lot further than in many other countries, in an effort to get some interesting angles I still had to crop quite severely. I was really happy even with shots cropped by and additional 1.5×, that gives the FoV of a 900mm lens. Add that I was shooting on a 50D and that brings it down to an un cropped equivalent on the 35mm format of 1440mm! The Sigma OS, with the aid of the shoulder support, really did the business.

Alan
