My 7D MK II sets in the safe and is hardly ever used, I thought I would check the battery today and it was almost dead [10 weeks without use]. Should I store the camera with the battery removed?

This is more worrying about hurting the camera than finding my battery needs charged.

Long term, store them separately. Also, store the battery ~40% to 50% charged.

Heya,

Take the battery out when storing long term.

Charge the batteries before storing them. Top them off once a month or so for overall health and longevity.

Then again, if it's just sitting in a box and hardly ever used, maybe consider liquidating it?

Very best,

As vulture said, charge it to about 50% for storage. Half-charged Li-ion batteries last longer. Don't let it discharge completely and then sit. After a while that could kill it.

Thanks for the info.

I have liquidated several times only to buy again within a year, I just like having a camera around.

Very best,

I disagree on both counts. Both ideas waste some of the limited number of times a rechargeable battery is rechargeable. I have never seen a recommendation charge a battery before STORING it long term. Got data?

Lithium needs to be stored in a charged state. You shouldn't worry about charge cycles, you should worry about voltage. If you store it at a low state of voltage, you will harm the battery.

The OP is storing his battery and checking it out and found it to be almost dead. Granted, that's from the camera and it being stored in the camera. Stored in a charged state (40% or more), it should sit just fine for years with minimal loss. But if it is losing charge over time in just a few days or weeks in the safe, then it will need to be charged and kept in a charged state so it would be prudent to check it periodically. That battery would be faulty or end of life at this point if that's the case.

There is no need however to monthly charge a lithium battery that is healthy, if it's known to be healthy and being stored in a charged state. This comment was directed at the OP's current battery state and situation.

As for the data, you can google it. BatteryUniversity.com has great information.

Very best,
