I asked a similar question in the sony thread and got no answer yet.

Is time lapse 4K or can you make it 4K during processing, also I will be using a Nikon D610 and a Sony A6000..

Sure you can set the resolution to 4k if your editor supports that resolution. I'm not familiar with those cameras but it's likely there are greater than 4k pixels on the long side.

If you are a shooting using a DSLR in "stills" mode for the timelapse then as long as your camera can record images with a long edge longer than 4096 pixels, you can crop and resize down the individual images to make 4K video without any quality loss. That's as long as your editing software is capable of working with 4K.

Can it be done in camera. My Sony A6000 and Nikon D610 both have built in time lapse??

Do they do 4K video at all? If they don't, they won't. If they do, you may have to look for the fine print in the manuals. But a quick look at their specs suggests they only do 1080p video.

How does "built-in time-lapse" work? Does it produce a video file or is it just a mode for shooting a number of still images over time with settings for start and stop time and interval?

Gonna depend on the camera; the GoPro Hero4 Black originally took a series of stills and merged them in post; a later firmware update enables it to now create an in-camera movie file. The D610, if I'm reading the manual right, creates the movie in-camera using the camera's current movie settings (hence 1080p max). I didn't look back at the A6000.
