I am considering trading in my Canon 5d2 (with some glass) and Fuji x100s and replacing with an a6300 and a few lenses.

Just before I pull the trigger I want to ask for opinions on whether it is worth considering the a7r ii?

My main considerations are :-

1. Small size is important. I actually love the fuji but it is really only good for people shots and not great for action.
2. My main subjects are my family/kids but i also occasionally shoot concerts, landscapes, action/sports and macro.
3. I use a Canon 430 flash with my 5d2 and would like to be able to have something similar for bounce and with light modifiers. It would be nice to consider off-camera flash at some point although I have never tried it.

So I figured I could get the same size as the fuji in the a6300 for days out but for holiday trips i could pack a couple of lenses and a flash and get 90% of the benefit of an SLR.

So do the extra benefits of the a7r ii justify the size and price increase for me? Any thoughts appreciated.

Personally I've left the FF world and have the a6300 now and love it. I haven't used it much but have done a few tests and the improvements are much better than I was getting on the a7ii. I venture to say the high iso is better than the a7ii and the focus system is awesome. Since you mention sports/action the a7rii would be much worse than the a6300.

As far as price, you could get the a6300 and a couple lenses for the price of the body alone of the a7rii. If you don't need FF, get the a6300, you won't be disappointed.

I have both, a7Rii is mine and A6300 is used by my fiance.

I like both cameras, both produce excellent photos.

a7Rii benefits:
better low noise
higher mp
more controls
better handing
doesn't change fov on legacy glass
IBIS

a6300 benefits
smaller
pocketable (depends on pockets)
works well with speed boosters
faster

i'm sure i missed something, it all depends what your priority, I like A6300, but I wouldn't give up the a7RII.

i had a play with the a6300 today. i have to say that the af is really good. i can see there is going to be a bit of a learning curve but the tech seems solid.

Very pleased. The iq is superb and it works well with my longer canon lenses using the metabones.

I have sold my fuji x100s and my canon 5d2. I would never use either now I have the a6300.

The af is so much better than anything else I have tried.

I'm in the same situation. I own a 5dii and i bought an A6300 with 18-105mm F4 lens. 4K video quality is very good but photo quality did not satisfy me with this lens. I tried a Zeiss 55mm f1.8 ZA in a store but sharpness is not so good when compared to my 100 L. I also tried sigma 60mm f1.8 Art e mount. Sharpness is good but result is little bit flat. I liked the photo quality of Batis 85mm or GM 85 1.4 but they are very expensive. Finally, i decided to but Sigma MC-11 to use my 100L and 50mm f1.4 art lenses. Zeiss provides very good contrast and bokeh quality but it is not as sharp as Canon L lenses.

there was something wrong with that zeiss lens then, as the Zeiss 55 is definitely a lot sharper then Canon 100L

100L is not extremely sharp to begin with, Sony 90 Macro wipes the floor with 100L

I never tested 90mm but i think 100 L is a excellent lens. Zeiss 55mm is little bit sharper than 50mm. Zeiss has micro contrast and clarity advantages. I compared 100L with Zeiss 55mm in sharpness not 100mm.

You can look at my sig and see almost just a fraction of what I own. I spent 2 separate weeks in WDW in May and June and only took my RX10 Mk I and a6300 out of the bags.

It is highly unlikely I'll ever drag everything else down there again and I've drug everything 4-5 times a year for decades. If you knew me, you would know that speaks volumes.
