Canon is very proud of their LP-E6 batteries and Charger (LC-E6). You can tell by the price.

In an effort to save money I saw some PowerExtra batteries and chargers from extremely less than the Canon price.
Has anyone had any experience with these? Do the last?

I also saw the STK brand for similar prices. Anyone had experience with these?

STK is SterlingTek. They're a long-recognized and well-respected third-party brand.

We tried SterlingTek batteries in the 70D and 5D3 and went back to Canon batteries. We found that they didn't last as long as the Canon batteries when shooting and even more irritating is they would not hold a charge for more than a week sitting in the camera bag. So every time we went to use one it was dead and had to be recharged.

Calicajun,
I hope I do not experience the same poor results. I just bought 4 of them. Of course I already have 6 of the canon or Watson batteries, so I will be ok. Some events I shoot are constant servo, and that seems to eat a battery quickly.
At the last event (ice skating) I shot over 20,000 pics in one day. I went through multiple batteries and was charging them at the same time. I got the extras so I am sure not to run out.
I better make sure I charge these new ones the night before the shoot coming up next month.

Wasabi is another good brand. They're on Amazon (external link) and very affordable. I think they come with a 3 year warranty where as STK comes with 18 months. My LP-E6 still works but gives a communication error when I turn on my 5D3. It's way past the warranty but I may get the Wasabi. All depends if I plan on upgrading to the rumored 5D4

1Kind,
The 5D4 would have to be one whale of an improvement to get me to upgrade from my recently purchased 5D3. Love the 5D3.

The only batteries I have ever had problems with have been the Canon branded ones; the one which came with my 7D is showing degradation on the recharge performance after only a dozen or so cycles. I have been using STK for many years with success and minimal loss of performance over dozens of cycles.

Some people don't care for the Powerex batteries and prefer the Eneloops. I have both and really don't have a preference.

I have had the exact opposite experience noticing no difference in how long they last. I just popped a pair into my 6D that I charged five or six weeks ago and both registered 99 percent. I have used them in a 20D,30D,40D,50D,7D, 7D Mk II, 5D Mk II, and 6D. In all that time I received one battery that didn't seem to hold a charge properly and STK quickly replaced it.

I used that brand in my Canon 40D and never had a problem with them at all. Just never had any luck with that brand in our T1i, 70D and 5D3, so we just use Canon batteries now. Could just be our bad luck and may not be the same for others.

Calicajun,

Just fair warning, using my STK LP-E6, it initially didn't deliver up to my expectations. It in fact came up noticeably short. But after 3 to 4 discharge/recharge cycles it was every bit the equal of the Canon battery.

Wasabi by the way typically bundles two batteries with a charger, something you may find worthwhile with the number of batteries you own. You aren't leaving batteries on the charger for extended periods are you?

I take the batteries off the charger within ten minutes of flashing light saying it is done. :)
