I did a search to no avail... As anyone with a Canon lens and hood can attest to, there's a range of fit on the hoods from really snug to somewhat loose.

I haven't really looked at the situation in great detail yet, but I'm looking to solve a slightly loose lens hood. That is, it wobbles a bit. I'm thinking I could probably give the bayonet ring a little squeeze with pliers (covering the hood with some fabric to prevent damage of course).

The lens/hood are brand new, and there's no play in the hood and its ring. For reference, it's a 24-70mm ƒ/2.8L.

I'm wondering if other people have found a good solution to solving loose bayonet mounts on their hoods? What's worked for you?

You could try building up the rails inside the hood mount with something that you could brush on and have harden up. I would experiment (on other similar plastics that are disposable) with a super-glue gel, lacquer, etc.

Reducing the overall inside diameter of the rails by a small amount will go a long way to tightening up the hood.

try a hair dryer....heat the hood at the mount, then put it on right away....it should form to the lens....I did this a lot years ago with my Nikon stuff......don

Thanks, guys. I'll have to take a closer look at the hood/lens interface when I get home tonight and see what the options are.

It's a week old, so I'm in no rush to fold, spindle or mutilate just yet. I'm just looking to ever so slightly snug it up.

Just to be clear, it's not the issue of having the front lens ring (with the red stripe) come loose. It's just slight slop in the mount.

I bought an EW83DII hood to use on my 16-35 f/2.8L, and it was too tight. There were two little places in the "threads" inside the hood that were different from the original hood, and had to be taken out surgically.

What you need to do is somehow build up the "threads" to reduce the clearance between them and the lens body.

If it's only a week old, maybe Canon can do something for you - or at least give you a tried and true method of tightening it up. They owe it to you.

The EW-83E Hood that came with my 17-40L fits my EF-S 10-22 rather loose but in noway will it come off on its on. Just not near as tight as the fit it has on the 17-40L.

Okay, I looked at the lens/hood combo in greater detail and see the mechanism involved.

I tried heating the hood with a hairdryer and gently pushing against the plastic and holding for a couple of seconds to let it cool... Hoping that I could warp it enough to gain some extra pressure. A few quick attempts and no joy.

However, I FIXED IT! Here's how.

Grab a bent needle nose plier (or similar) and a rag. Put the lens hood down on the table such that the back of it (camera side) is up. What would be the top and bottom of the hood (when *installed*) you'll see the plastic ridge. Line up your center with the pliers, throw the rag over the hood and gently dimple (bend down, towards the front of the hood) the ridge. It doesn't take much pressure at all! Better to do it too little than too much.

What you end up with is two dimples on the top and bottom of the plastic ridge that sits against the bayonet/flange on the lens. It creates just enough pressure to tighten up the hood nicely! It's clean and easy.

If anyone would like, I'll snap a picture so you can see what the hell I'm talking about.

Thanks everyone for their suggestions!

I have the same problem with my newly bought 24-70. So a picture of your solution would be much appreciated.

Totally crappy photo, but tweaked to enhance the dimple. Basically it's a little dip that you want to create. This increases the pressure between the metal tabs of the bayonet mount on the lens. You don't need much at all and you definitely don't want to make it too tight or break the hood.

Give the hood a gentle tweak, and you should be aces!

The hood is front facing down. The dimple is centered where the TOP of the mounted hood would be, and directly across on the bottom as well. If your hood is really loose, you can dimple it more or add an extra dimple or two.

No need - but I did come up with additional thoughts on my idea to build up the thread rails. There is an epoxy that comes in a two-part syringe intended for plastics. It is in a gel form rather than a liquid. One could mix that up and spread a thin layer on the inside edges (that contact the lens barrel) to build up the thickness and reduce the slop.

The beauty of this method is that no damage would be done to the original shape - all you would have to do to return to absolute original is to carefully scrape the epoxy off.
