Hi all.

how many owners of this camera are none pro/serious ameture toggers?

The reason i ask is because it seems that if you are not a pro shooting sports and wildlife, this camera is overkill and its best to wait for a 5d upgrade instead?

Thoughts?

I'm a 'pro' at having fun only, and the Xii is certainly fun!!
5Div ??? If I'm to add something slow it'll be the 5Dsr ;)

I'm not a pro and I am seldom serious. I got the mark ii just for bragging rights "My 1dx ii is bigger than your 5D iv";-)a

Stunned by how good this camera is - paired up with EF100-400 II and TC 1.4 III combo.

I'm a full time "generalist" photographer.

I shoot everything from cars, weddings, products to fashion stuff on my 1Dx Mkii. Pretty sure I've already taken at least 15,000 photos in the roughly 6 weeks I've had it. Phenomenal performance all around. I never shoot sports or wildlife either ha.

Daniel's absolutely killing it with the 1DX II!

But then, he did the same on the 5D3 and the 135/2 threads, so no big surprise! :)

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

No, the physical and electrical interfaces are both different.

Or a a7r2 ;)

i think pairing an a7r2 with a 1dxmk2 makes sense :)

if i need the MP and detail on not so fast moving subjects or want to hike somewhere, the a7r2 does it but if i want pure fast performance and able to shoot in all weather conditions, 1dx2 is the one.

There is no one camera that does it all!

But many on other forums laugh at me even suggesting buying a 1dx2 as a serious hobbiest! i thought only pros use 1dx2!!!!

Damm :(

Why diddnt Canon stick with either cfast or compact flash?

The price of cfast si quite expensive at the moment. i hope they go down in price soon

Rumour is that that 54 will have CFAST as well. So, based on the popularity of that camera I'd say chances are pretty high as volume increases, prices will drop too.

Up until this release, the only cameras that really used the Cfast 2.0 cards were from ARRI and Blackmagic. Zero reason for the prices to come down with small numbers of higher end customers. And let's make no mistake, the 1DXII customers are also considered higher end. We aren't the general market for memory cards. I'm really hoping that the 5D4 has a Cfast 2.0 slot. That will bring the format to an actual mass market driving the price down, and the quality up.

I think you might be mis-guided on what a "pro" photographer is. By most accounts, and I think most would agree, a pro photographer is someone that relies on photography to generate their income. Truth be told, that usually means they spend 80% of their time as a small business owner, marketing specialist, and salesman. 20% of their time is spent doing actual photography. Some are great at their photography and some are actually quite average. But the fact that they rely on photography to put the bread on the table makes them a "pro" in the public's eye.

There is also an entirely other class of photographers that simply love creating beautiful images. There are tons of them out there, and their skills are superb. (Just look at the work they are posting here in this very thread.) They are able to fully utilize the features that the Canon 1D X Mark II brings to the table. The camera is not overkill in the slightest. It simply provides more features and capabilities.

When it comes to buying a camera (or a lens for that matter), it boils down to what features you need, desire, and can afford. It's as simple as that. A camera does not make a great photographer. Never has and never will. A camera does not make someone a pro and it never will. It is just a static item that provides certain features and nothing more.

Weigh and discuss the various factors as they apply to you. Buy what you need or what you desire. Buy what you can afford. That is all it really comes down to.

Cheers,
Bryan

That discussion has taken place, many times over. It boils down to Canon making this a transitionary period for the break to full-time CFast capability. Canon decided on this because many people have already made heavy investments in fast CF cards and if they only included two CFast slots, there would have been a lot of upset people so Canon choose the best middle ground they could to keep as many people happy as they possibly could.

Canon's decision is not the best for everybody, but it is the best (at this time) for the majority.

Cheers,
Bryan
