Hi Fordmondeo

I am close to you (Gosport) and have a 1DX Mk2. I have been meaning to get to the Mach Loop for some time. If you want some company and to be able to compare images taken with the same setup at the same time give me a shout and if timings are right I would be happy to come with you.

I did not notice I had set exposure compensation.
Well spotted, that probably explains a lot.

That said. I'm wondering if the temperature of the camera itself has anything to do with noise? The sun was on the camera at times throughout the day and did sometimes feel quite hot/warm.

If you take a shot that's 1 stop underexposed, and raise it in post by one stop then at best it's going to be the equivalent to a shot taken at double the ISO.

It's complicated - sometimes an in-camera ISO increase is better than pushing in post, sometimes it's not, but roughly; an ISO 2000 shot that's pushed 1 stop in post would be similar to an ISO 4000 shot in camera.

Heat could be an issue though. But I'd assume the 1D series cameras were built for that, given the punishment they're expected to take for, say, pro sports shooting.

Camera, some lenses, too little time, too little talent

Hello Fordsabroad.

My wife and I are of to the loop in August. We are staying two nights in a hotel very close to cad east/west.
Much as it would be interesting to make shot comparisons, unless you can get accommodation in the same hotel on the same nights, travelling together may not be practical.

Regards.

Hi Fordmondeo
It was just a thought but probably impractical, especially in August. I will look forward to seeing your results, hope you are happier with the camera this time around.

Well in truth, I had only had the camera a few days before going to the loop.
It would appear I made a few mistakes when trying to adjust the camera with it to my eye.
Under controlled tests on a grey subject the noise levels are acceptable so I'm generally very pleased with it.

I just need to work on my panning skills now.

I went out this morning to photograph eagles. I didn't find any, but it was a good day anyhow. It was very cloudy, so the light was dim but excellent. I was hand-holding and it was breezy, so I really couldn't go below 1/1000th. Thus the ISOs are pretty high. The 1DX2 handled it very well. :-)

Sorry - I have posted these in the lens gallery as well - all shot jpeg in camera and a few cropped in.

Am I impressed with this camera - I would say so, just sorry I can't afford a second for a back up [Sigh]

Few with the mkIII 1.4 extender, not my first choice for the track but think it worked out pretty well.
