I had a lot of fun photographing the total solar eclipse of August 21, 2017. I'd never been to a total eclipse before, and I never tried to photograph one. I wanted to get this one! I did a lot of research, came up with my plan, and practiced it frequently. For me, it paid off. Here are my results.

Just before first contact:

IMAGE: http://www.lj3.com/1dx2/TSE_00.jpg

50% partial eclipse:
IMAGE: http://www.lj3.com/1dx2/TSE_01.jpg

The last crescent I took before the Diamond Ring:
IMAGE: http://www.lj3.com/1dx2/TSE_02.jpg

The Diamond Ring (about 30 seconds after the previous shot):
IMAGE: http://www.lj3.com/1dx2/TSE_03.jpg

Baily's Beads (8 seconds after the diamond ring). The sun is shining through the valleys between mountains.
IMAGE: http://www.lj3.com/1dx2/TSE_04.jpg

Start of totality (just 3 seconds after Baily's Beads):

Image editing ok; C&C always welcome.

This is the corona at totality. It's a blend of two photos. Note the little white dot near the lower left corner of the image. It's the star Regulus (thanks to Mark Urwiller for the correction).

And here's the second half as the eclipse recedes:

The end of totality:

Baily's Beads:

The Diamond Ring:

The first crescent after totality:

About 50% of the partial eclipse:

The sun just after last contact:

Don't do it! They are seriously compatible bodies. If you own both, nothing is out of reach photographically. They offset each other's strengths and weaknesses perfectly..

I would also wait and see
My guess is that Canon will update the 5Ds with the new sensor technology now that Nikon announced the D850....If Canon does that, then I see the 5Ds as a better option for portrait for and formals

The D850 is a awesome camera. almost 50MP with a D5 focus system and clean clean ISO for $3500.00... Canon will have to make a move that competes and thats the camera to get

Posted in lens forum as well -

Few hours at Colchester Zoo on a bank holiday weekend during school holidays in scorching temperatures, what could possibly go wrong lol.
It was a day for a tiger today, not a lot of variation but she did at least stay in one place, fencing was around 10' away so couldn't lose it completely, tried to mask it a little in lightroom - not perfect but hey - it was a zoo so there are going to be fences sometimes!

All in camera jpeg with a few minimal tweaks in lightroom, 1DX mkII, Canon 200-400 with built in extender
