Just got the 1DXII loaner..........

16 FPS

Wow.

Coming from the 5D4, my foremost thoughts are: heavy brick of a camera body, and lack of touch screen is annoying. It took me a little longer to set up all of the customizations because I'm so used to tapping and swiping :p

The AI Servo is a thing of beauty. Did a quick test and had my dog run straight at me. 85 f/1.4L mounted, low light, and out of the bazillion photos, every one was tack sharp in focus.

Haven't done any file edits yet, as I'm still getting settled in. If the rain lets up in the next few days, I'll hopefully get to point this thing at some birds!

Looking forward to some birding shots, especially when comparing to your 500/4 II.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

The autofocus on the 1DXII is simply amazing even under the worst lighting conditions. You will be able to get many captures that are simply not possible without it. I tried everything else before moving to the 1DXII.

Matthew, my understanding was that the 5D4 focus system was borrowed from the 1DX Mark II. Do you find the 1DX Mark II to be better than the 5D4 in the focusing department?

I have shot the 5D4 and yes the 1DX system is more accurate, and faster. The 5D4 is a nice body but I would choose the 1DXII every time. I think the extra speed and processing power is part of the 1DXII magic. Try one for yourself, but beware your wallet may end up a little lighter. The good news is you will be very pleased with the quality of the images.

So far: yes. Especially with the big whites, the 1DX II has a "faster uptake" than the 5D4 has. The AF on the 5D4 sort of smoothly slides into place and locks on, whereas the 1DX II is more staccato and snaps into place with authority. In the view finder you can tell that the 1DX gets there and is ready by that visual snap. This is what they meant when they said that the 1 series bodies drive the lenses faster. Very cool indeed :-)

I would love the 1DX II some day. I tried my 5D4 with my 500/4 II and 1.4X III last weekend. Focusing was great and better than my 7D2, but everything looked so small! I am having a hard time coming to grips with the loss of the 1.6X factor! Sounds like I need to compensate by moving up the 600! :D

That’s probably what’s in the cards for me too; I’m stoked by how not heavy the 600 is compared to my 500.

I've got to find someone to buy my 500 though. The only problem with these giant primes is that they are such a niche product and the number of potential buyers is tiny.

So I set up customizations on the 1DX II to match my 5D4, but there's bound to be some good stuff that I've missed. Any cool or exclusive features that I should look into that I don't have on the 5D4? The two buttons on the front of the camera (above the DOF button) are new, I have no idea what to use those for yet.

Yeah, it's going to be interesting trying to move this lens if it comes down to it. I may have the luxury of holding on to the 500 for a while though, so I'm not too worried about moving it quick.

Then again, the rumored upcoming Big White announcements have me both interested and worried... if they release a 500 or 600 DO, that will definitely influence any lens decision I make here in the next few weeks. Either way I'm probably going to wait and see what happens, and then either go for a new DO model (which could take months to hit stores), or pick up a super cheap 600 II when everyone starts unloading :D

Those two C.Fn2 are quite useful, by default they are set to switch to registered af point. I had to look on the manual to see how that worked lol.
It's page 448 if you are wondering. :p
But obviously you can set them for something else. I'm playing with that myself right now.
