I think the area of the sensor occupied by the bird will be 2.25x larger using the 600 (= 600/400^2).

Also bear in mind that if you crop on the 5DSR then you lose the light-gathering advantage of the full-frame sensor so you'd be looking at 7D2 levels of noise, etc.

Well, the 50mp sensor on the 5DS(R) would be the same of having a 19.5mp APS-C (crop sensor) camera if you crop it down to APS-C dimensions. So you can kind of view that 400mm lens as a 640mm "reach" by cropping it down to 19.5mp in the center.

I don't think the image is going to be 34% bigger. However, the pixel dimensions of the subject would be very, VERY similar.

Took the new body to its first E session last night.

This is close to a straight off file. I thought the camera did great. I dont have a lot to do If they select this for a print.

Also really nice to have 1/250 for a gate speed. 5D3 is 1/160 max. I can get it to 1/320 with the gate barely visible in Bright light....shade and I really have to look

2nd shot was on the water with a 3 stop ND filter. Really bright. But it handled the bright light and the flash killed the shadows. Worked well outside with a strobe

I'm afraid that the old lens like 135L can't perform with the newest body as well as with the older bodies. I am a 135L big fan, cheap but superb, although it is a great lens, if it can't perform as it should be, i will not spend some money on it. David arbogast found an odd bokeh from 5DSR + 35L II combo, i want to prevent something like this happen to me. This is apparently my first and my last photography tools purchase, maybe for next 5 years or longer. So i have to choose them very carefully, moving from thread to thread to see samples from the tools i want to buy.

Here are the numbers;
400mm x 1.5 = 600mm
So multiply 1.5x1.5 = 2.25

The 5Ds 50MP divided by 2.25 = 22.22MP
(this number assumes a standard rectangular aspect ratio crop from the 400mm down to 600mm. I bet your 33MP is closer if we were talking about circular image sensors matching up to the circular image projected by a lens. )

So, with a 5Ds and 400mm you will get 22.22MP in the exact same field of view that a 1Dx2 will put 20MP (or any FF will put it's MP) with a 600mm mounted.

You're thinking Nikon, me thinks. Canon is x1.6.

Thanks for the answers Looks like my next lens will be the 400do mkII to pair with my 5dsr as a lighter setup with no loss of reach .
Hopefully I wont need to crop too much .

You could always pick up a 2x TC (since I believe the 400 DO is f/4?) and then you'll be flying high with a 800mm lens.

Oh Glorious 800mm. I need to commandeer some Kenko non-reporting 2x TC so I can stack it to my 2xiii and do something silly like astrophotography.

You will only have the same reach if you crop the 5DSR to APS-C. This will get you roughly the same number of pixels on the subject (~20MP) but as you're capturing light over a smaller area you lose some of the signal-to-noise advantages of the full-frame sensor. (You're effectively shooting with a 7D2).

I also have a 5DSR and I do crop it when I need more reach but I reckon I lose a stop at high-ISO. (If I'm using the full-frame, it's good to ~ISO3200 but only ~ISO1600 when cropped to APS-C). The big advantage that the 5DSR has over an APS-C is that you can take the crop from anywhere in the frame.
