Hello to all,
My 7D takes great pics. In the past I was able to import from my card into my laptop. Now I need to remove the memory card and use a Memory Card Reader (with which I can cope).
My local camera tech quoted me an outrageous $250 to do the repair. vmad
Is this fair or is there another solution?
I know the card is good and have tried 2.
I know the cable is good and have tried 2.
Please let me know.

Have you tried a hard reset and clear all Cfs back to factory settings?

How do I hard reset?
The tech may have done that since I noticed I had to reset the date when I picked it up.
Thanks.

A soft reset (return to factory defaults) is done via the menu system. Parameters in the tool menu, custom functions in the C.Fn menu. This is general. Check you user's manual for details for you particular camera.

Have you tried another computer as well?

Stupid idea, I know, but you didn't mention trying it with another connecting cable from camera to computer.

What did the repair tech tell you needs fixin'?

It sounds as if you normally connect the camera to the computer via the USB cable, to download your images.

One of the reasons that's generally a bad idea.... one of the reasons it is better to pop the card out of the camera and use a memory card reader instead... is because the USB port on many cameras is part of the main IC board and, if it gets damaged or worn out, will be expensive to repair. $250 actually might be a bargain price for the repair. (Downloading via the cable also is often slower and relies upon the camera's battery for power... and if that ever runs low during a download you risk corrupting some images.)

I use the USB cable occasionally to set up my cameras, and far less frequently as a backup means of download.... But most of the time I just use a memory card reader.
