I have a Canon 50D, and don’t like the way when I push the button to change ISO all metering information disappears and when I roll a dial to change the ISO there is no way to reference how the changes impact the exposure.

I have learned that with the Canon 70D and 7DMII / 7DM2 / 7DM11 and newer or better cameras you can program the camera so that when you push the SET button in the middle of the rear dial and then spin the rear dial you change ISO while metering is live. So if you are in Manual / 125 / 5.6 you can roll the ISO until the exposure needle is where you want it.

I want to research how Nikon cameras deal with changing ISO while metering is live. What APS-C camera model and above or after has this, how does it work, and in general how is Nikon different from or better than Canon in dealing with changing shutter, aperture, ISO, and white balance while I am walking through an industrial building with different and changing photographic requirements.

Does Nikon have a name for this? Like real time ISO? How far in Nikon model years can I go back / to save money / and still get a Canon 50D or better Nikon camera that does this? I don’t need the latest camera and don’t need video.

It has been a few years since I've owned a Nikon DX camera so can't help the specifics of your question I'm sorry. On the other hand, Nikon's AutoISO (which was on the D7000 I used) was excellent at having the camera calculate and set an appropriate ISO for the scene and other set exposure values.

I can tell you though that my D4 drops pretty much all other metering information when I press the ISO (or movie record button reprogrammed for ISO) button. But then as I've got it in Auto ISO with a base of 100 pretty much all the time except when using flash it's not an issue for me. I don't know if even that body allows the same SET/wheel operation for ISO to be assigned using custom functions that you describe from the more recent Canon APS-C bodies.

I saw a video on YouTube for setting the ISO on a Nikon D7000 and when they pressed the ISO button all the metering information went blank. I wonder since some say the 7200 is kind of an competitor to the 7D Mark II if the 7200 has live ISO while metering since I hear the 7D Mark II does. I think those two cameras are the level I need to be researching for my next camera.

Yeah fair enough. Don't totally discount how helpful a good AutoISO implementation can be though.

IMO based on features and capability I would expect the D500 to be a closer match for the 7D2 than the D7200. Some sensor metrics aside, the 7D2 has the D7200 beaten in pretty much all other aspects IMO.

Wow. Thank you. I did not know about that camera. Going to be fun watching videos of that model.
