I have been playing around with shooting macro via Live View and I like it but it seems like my backgrounds are quite a bit darker to black when using Live View as opposed to the same capture without it. What could be the cause?

Are you talking about what you see through live view/lens or when you have taken the photo?
If the former I would turn off live view exposure compensation (I think I don't have a 70D but I had that problem with a 7D MK II).

Ok, I was able to go out and do some comparison shots and I was able to figure out the issue. It was a figment of my imagination!
