I started this thread in the WTB Classifieds forum but it's gotten a few responses trying to help me find a workaround with software that I already have or can readily downoad. Thought I might get a few more responses here without cluttering up the classified threads.

I have a Canon Digital Rebel (300D) that I'm trying to access to change the owner's name in the EXIF data. None of my current, updated Canon software seems to recognize this camera when connected to my computer. Windows does recognize the camera when connected by USB cable. Have tried both EOS Utilities and the Camera Settings apps with no success.

Has anybody saved their old Canon Digital Solutions Disk that was originally used with the Digital Rebel (300D)? I'm thinking that the original software disk might be required to access the Camera Settings for this specific camera, according to what I've read on Canon's site. If you don't want to part with the actual disk I'd gladly pay a reasonable price for a copy and shipping. Thanks in advance for rooting around in your collection of old software CDs... :p

I have attempted to access the camera's settings with the following results.

Using ZoomBrowser EX>Acquire & Camera Settings
Connect to Camera responds with "Camera Window is not compatible with the connected camera".

Connect to EOS Camera responds with "Choose Canon CameraWindow for this camera".

Using ImageBrowser EX>Import/Camera Settings
Connect to Camera responds with "Camera Window is not compatible with the connected camera".

Connect to EOS Camera opens dialog for "Pairing over WiFi/LAN".

I'm working with Win7 Ultimate x64. And I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure this out. :p

Thank you, Pekka! I'm sure some members here might have imagined that POTN might begin winding down. But that doesn't make the news any less disappointing. So generous of you to allow us to go along for the ride. As a result you gave us a way to help each other become better photographers. But there's still so much more to learn.

Yep - I'm sure there's a way around it - but the computer is too new for the camera.

Unfortunately even with the original disk you will need a computer running Windows XP in order to connect to it. You won't even be able to do it using Vista, Canon never upgraded 300D support to Vista, let alone anything newer. I have the disk, and could probably just stick it on Dropbox, but without XP it isn't going to help.

LOL! That's weird. Windows Update doesn't seem to think so... :p

I wondered the same thing. Yet Canon offers A ZoomBrowser download for WinXP, Vista and 7. But the installation notes on their site gives me the impression that CameraWindow for this specific camera can only be downloaded from the CD that was originally shipped with the camera.

Per the Canon USA site:

"ZoomBrowser EX 6.6.0b Application for Windows XP / Windows Vista / Windows 7 is a full-version software that will install ZoomBrowser EX 6.6.0b on your computer, or update a previously installed version of ZoomBrowser EX to version 6.6.0b. CameraWindow is no longer included in ZoomBrowser EX 6.6.0b or later. CameraWindow is available on the CD-ROM as a separate module. If necessary, install CameraWindow from the CD-ROM bundled with the product. Note: The serial number of your Canon product (Camera, printer...etc.) is required to download this file."

I might take you up on this offer as I still have a WinXP machine in my, ummm, collection. I've got an old Solutions disk from a Canon G5 but I think I already tried installing it in XP and still couldn't access the Rebel/300D Camera Settings thru Camera Window or EOS Utilities.

Have you tried connecting the camera to your computer via the USB cable, turning it on, and running the Digital Photo Professional Updater for Windows?

If you don't have the updater, you can download it from the Canon website with your 60D serial number (https://www.usa.canon.com …ails/cameras/dslr/eos-60d (external link)). When you run the updater, connect the 300D (not the 60D) and power it on, and it *might* update your software to include 300D relevant settings and features.

I've done this in the past for cameras and had a lot of success in sorting out issues on both Mac and PC, but I've never done it for something as old as the 300D. The oldest I've done this for is the T1i.

I found a link for an older version namely
Canon EOS Utility 2.4.0.1
http://www.softwaredriverdownload.com/canon_eos_utility_2401.html (external link)
Check to see what version you have installed on your XP machine. If this is older it may work for you as it does list the original Rebel as supported. It is an update so you'll have to do a simple change to the registry to have it install as a new installation.

The 300D pre-dates DPP and although it will process 300D CRW files, it won't connect to the camera as there are no drivers for it. It is the lack of drivers for other operating systems that stops the 300D from working, not necessarily the software version. I did once get my 300D connected to the computer, using the clunky camera window software, but the USB1 connections was so slow that you couldn't actually use it to shoot in anything other than a small sized JPG without waiting ages for the file to transfer. I guess it would be OK for setting the © info, but other than that it's not of much help. The RAW converter that was supplied back then was so poor that it quickly made me look at alternatives.

Sorry to take so long to respond.

I like the way you all are thinking, and had high hopes that one of your suggestions would get me to where I wanted to go. But still no luck, so far. And the more I read online, especially on Canon's site, the more I think the only way to access the Rebel/300D is to have the original Solutions Disk supplied with the camera.

I went back through my collection of disks going back to my Canon A20 and G5, opened them in Explorer and read any of the "Readme" files I could find. Nowhere was there any mention of the 300D among any of the camera models mentioned.

So, BigAl007, if the offer still stands I'll take you up on the download of a copy of your 300D Solutions Disk. I think the disk is something like version 6 or 6.x? It's not urgent by any means, the camera works fine without it. I just like the idea of having my name attached to my image files and "branded" into the body in case anything "funny" should happen to it.

And thanks again for everybody's help. 8-)
