Often the noise is predominantly in one channel on modern CMOS sensors, so with care you can remove a lot of it without sacrificing detail.
One thing the LR workflow allows is to export a file into Photoshop, process it and then continue editing losslessly (as far as the original RAW file is concerned) in Lightroom - a one-keystroke action which doesn't disrupt the Lightroom flow. It's very nice because you retain the original, the edited file remains in the Lightroom catalog, and you can order the processes to take advantage of the optimum tools. For example, you might handle basic RAW import and some slight cropping/exposure adjustments, export to Photoshop for special noise reduction, then finish up in LR with some overall NR. Or whatever works for your particular type of file. I like doing this because I only have to go to Photoshop for the difficult files and not wrestle with its more complex RAW import process for every shot; also, I prefer Lightroom's database.
