The reason I don't use just a straight noiseware action is that it removes too much detail smearing things. I have found that filtering each color channel affords me the opportunity to put detail back before moving to the final rgb channel. I also try to leave a bit of noise in the final result as it seems to help a tiny bit with the overall IQ. It is definitely a juggling act!

I just found a great use for ISO 16000. Shooting macros outside in the shade, where I try to shut down to f20 or so. The results are great right out of the camera, no post other than a bit of smart sharpening right from the OOC jpegs. I guess I have to remember this. I could edit the raw, export out and post process for a better result, but for what I am shooting, this is fine as is.

Great thread, thank you. I've been looking a getting the 7d2 to replace my 5D2 for a few reasons, and it's very nice to see that the 12,800 ISO shots clean up similar to shots out of the 5D2 at 6,400 or less. In fact from what I see, it may be closer to my 3,200 shots.

Amazing, thanks TS. I can now see that I have a lot to learn about PP. I have been using LR as that is what I was told as i was using nothing before lol. However now I notice that if, or when really, I have to remove noise, my shots seem to lose the "crisp"/"clear" factor. Is LR not a good choice or do I need to learn how to use it better? As I've mentioned before, these are only low light basketball pictures however I don't seem to be able to keep the "detail" in the shots after noise reduction. usually I find I have to shoot around 6400 ISO and they are just full of noise. cannot go lower otherwise they get very underexposed, especially at low light and high shutters speeds.

With the latest versions of LR, you can do alot of NR with the tools/sliders. I just don't use LR enough to tell you the steps. As I state in all of my different high ISO threads, I develop a method per camera model that removes almost a stop of noise with virtually no loss in critical detail.

This is remarkably clean and sharp for ISO 25600 on the 7D2. It looks more like 6400.

Amazing, thank you! I've never thought of looking at the individual color channels insofar as noise reduction goes. This blows the door off my workflow.

Often the noise is predominantly in one channel on modern CMOS sensors, so with care you can remove a lot of it without sacrificing detail.

One thing the LR workflow allows is to export a file into Photoshop, process it and then continue editing losslessly (as far as the original RAW file is concerned) in Lightroom - a one-keystroke action which doesn't disrupt the Lightroom flow. It's very nice because you retain the original, the edited file remains in the Lightroom catalog, and you can order the processes to take advantage of the optimum tools. For example, you might handle basic RAW import and some slight cropping/exposure adjustments, export to Photoshop for special noise reduction, then finish up in LR with some overall NR. Or whatever works for your particular type of file. I like doing this because I only have to go to Photoshop for the difficult files and not wrestle with its more complex RAW import process for every shot; also, I prefer Lightroom's database.

Is the channel-by-channel noise reduction capability only available in DPP and Photoshop? The LR NR seems to be for all the channels simultaneously.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

I think there are a couple of plugins that'll do per channel, but base LR does not
