Hello All,
New member here.

So my wife and I have a Canon Rebel XTi we have owned since 2008. It has brought us many years of preserved memories.

Yesterday when taking it out for my sons communion, it snapped about 3 pictures. Then slowly came to a grinding halt. Assuming it was the battery we put in a new one. No Luck. We then charged both batteries with no success.

When we put a fully charged battery in the green power LED comes on, the flash will pop up when i hold the shutter button down and the lens will focus.

The shutter will not fire and the screen will not turn on. When we switch the power to off, the green LED will stay on until I remove the battery..

Ive tried different batteries, Ive tried removing the CR2016 and replacing that battery as well.

Is there anything else I can try or is a new camera in my future.

Thank
Jason

Take the lens off, engage MLU and look to see if you can see the shutter blades. Are they bent? Is one hanging loose?

With MLU engaged and camera in manual mode, set SS to 1s and actuate the shutter. Watch carefully to see if the shutter curtains move. Note: Do not try to hold the mirror up with your finger during this operation.

Mark i cant activate any of the modes, the screen is blank.

I think part of it quit on me. I shake the fame and can hear something rattle within it.

With a good battery the flash will pop up and blink to focus but nothing beyond that. In the viewfinder the the green info illuminates and focuses the lens but nothing beyond that.

Thank You for the help.

Probably time for a new camera. Look on the bright side, lots of improvements since the Xti.:-)

Yes I agree. I was hoping not to spend more money.

I was at Sams club today looking at the T5 at 429 with new lenses it seems like a deal.

The noise you hear when shaking is most likelylikely the flash unit and orientation sensor. But yes it sounds quite bad if you cannot get the LCD screen to work. Any grip on the camera?

No its a stock XTi

Strange that it quit in the middle of working. My wife snapped several pictures which then came to a grinding halt.

Electronics will do that, rarely do they slowly degrade and give you indications, one component going on a board, and you can lose alot of functionality.

I would look at Canon refurbs, great way to save money and still get your 1 year warranty.

Personally, I would shy away from the T5 or T6 (very basic entry level cameras, less capable than the other rebels), and go for something like the T6i. If you are going to spend the money, why not get one of the latest most capable rebels?

2-3 day shipping is free too, so it won't take long to get to you.

You can get a 40d which is a major upgrade to the xti for $175-$250. Lots of deals to be had in the used equipment marketplace here on POTN.
