Left my new G9X outside today. Big thunderstorm came through.

Darn it! It's probably covered by my credit card, but still. Argh! I was really enjoying that thing. Only had it for four days.

I have it opened up and drying out upside down, so maybe it will work again. Maybe not.

It was a very strong thunderstorm with buckets of rain. I'll let you know if it survived.

Pull the battery and pack it in rice for a few days.
Might come back to life.

I don't think any water got in. It was poured on. I took out the battery last night, opened all the compartments, and placed it upside down on a cloth. I couldn't find any rice. It has so few buttons and is packed so tightly that it appears to have held up under the storm.

This morning I put the battery back in and it seems to work ok. It might have been slow at first, but I'm not sure. I took the battery out again, opened it up again, and looked for any possible moisture. Might not be any.

Each time I take the battery out, however, the camera is reset and asks for the date and time again. Not sure if that's normal. It might be, considering that the camera can be charged via USB, but it also comes with a charger.

I looked it up and the camera was purchased with American Express, which gives me 90 days of protection.

Rice is not a dessicant. If it were, it'd swell up in the package, and get mushy.
In fact, it's worse, as it impedes airflow. Please help stamp out this urban legend.

You can freeze-dry it (though with electronics, the ice expansion could cause damage).

You could carefully pre-heat an oven to a temp you are confident won't hurt the plastics (100f - 140f?), then turn off the oven and put the camera in. I use this method to dehydrate food.

You could buy actual dessicant, dry it in the oven, then pack the camera in it, inside a leak-proof container.

It's like it never happened (the rainstorm). The camera was soaking wet (externally), but at this point I'm convinced that not a drop of moisture got inside. I shouldn't be too surprised, as it actually takes dedicated effort to turn the camera on or to push the image play button. Both buttons are flush to the camera case and require effort to depress. As mentioned before, the shutter button and top dial seem very tight as well. It seems the only vulnerable spot is the pop-up flash, which isn't nearly as tight as the other potential openings, but it must have been tight enough.

What a hearty camera.
