Not sure if this should go here or in DIY. Mods feel free to move.

I'm meeting with a local plastics company today to see about making some 4' long translucent tubes with a bowens mount. Think saber strip for studio light.

I'm taking him a protective cover as an example of the base and thickness the tube needs to be. Looking at it I'm thinking if this was translucent it would be useful for bare bulb type shooting. Kinda like the mushroom on the 360X.

Anyone interested in such a gizmo? The black covers run $10 to $15. I can't imagine these will cost much more than that.

I hope the plastic you are considering is heavily textured so as to provide a frosted, translucent appearance, or it is not going to function like any bare tube head would function.

I will keep that in mind. Really depends on what they can make.

At worst case, you can deliberately CLOUD the clear, transparent Plexiglas surface simply by pouring Acetone over its surfaces! I don't know if that is as effective as sanding all shiny Plexiglas surfaces to make them like 'ground glass' translucent focusing screens, though. Also keep in mind cooling ports. This is a photo of a commercial bare tube head product

The saber light is black with internal reflective material on half to 2/3 of the diameter and then diffused surface on the rest.
Is that what you're talking about? but with a Bowens base to work with strobes?
If so, once I know about the light pattern it sounds like something I'd go for.

That is pretty much what I'm talking about.

Had a simple meeting with the plastics guy today. Doing exactly what I want is impractical. Next week I'm going to take a strobe in so they can get some exact measurements on the mount.

It's looking like the most practical solution according to them is to make a tube using frosted plexi. They will make a second tube with black plexi lined with silver mylar with the appropriate opening. I have to do up some drawings before the next meeting.

They actually make the tubes by taking a flat piece and shaping it. There will be a seam where it is sealed together but wont effect the light. I still have to work out the mounting pins.

I'm going to make one and test the crap out of it before doing a bigger run. They said doing the small ones would be best done with injection molding so not going to do those.
