Thanks for the advice guys! I checked the battery in System Info and with CoconutBattery and battery health was reported as being Normal/Good respectively. Is there anything else I should be looking for?

It's a late 2011 MBP (i7 2.2 w/Radeon something or other), so I'm definitely not a serial upgrader. I have USB 2 and one Thunderbolt port, so I run everything through a CalDigit Thunderbolt dock...certainly workable. I will try to get this machine up and running if I can. Should be able to drop it off at the shop on Tuesday if I can't figure it out by then.

The main reason for wanting more power is for video editing. Right now I mostly just do camera work and not a whole lot of editing, but more and more I get involved with projects where I need to do some editing. I can run FCP on my current machine, but it's an exercise in patience for sure. Tbh, even running LR and driving my external display are more in the "acceptable" performance realm.
