Hi guys,

I just jumped ship from my 6D combo to the a6300 recently. While the video department of the Sony camp is hugely impressive, I found the stills to be very much lacking in the pop/sharpness/micro-contrast.

My current combo is the a6300 with Zeiss 24mm/1.8. Compared to my previous combo of 6D+24-70ii, there is really no fight - the Sony loses hands down.

While it is not a completely fair comparison (FF vs APS-C), I was wondering whether I'd be able to close the gap (at most 5% difference?) if I were to get the 24-70 GM for my a6300.

Those with this particular combo - a6300 + 24-70GM - can it match the FFs in the stills department?

Let me know!

What made you choose the A6300 over say an A7ii or A7R?

I looked at buying a Sony A7ii but read a lot of negative reports on focus issues in lower light. I have always found full frame lenses work best on 35mm sensors. Maybe that isn't the case on Sony. However the 24-70 2.8 GMaster is an expensive lens to find out if it does. I had a 6d and used it with a 24-70Mkii and it was stunning. Never missed focus and was fast. Only the weight was a negative.

Adapted lenses tend to struggle in low light with the a7rII and a7rII.....if I still shot weddings and events I'd probably pull the trigger on the 24-70GM but since I don't tend to use my EF 24-70II in low light, I haven't felt the need to get the GM.

With native lenses the AF is very good in low light though, with greater accuracy than a DSLR to boot.

used to be a 100% photo guy, but have been doing a lot of videos recently, hence a6300 is the only sensible choice in Sony world.

based on the results, I'd have to maintain 2 bodies for photo and video!

Every system has pros/cons. The GH4 can shoot all day long with huge battery capacity with a good 2.5hrs of shooting however low light is not nearly as good as A6300. No/little jello effect or over heating issues with a panny G7 or GH3/GH4.

For smaller clips in the 20-25 minutes is apparently safe for A6300 video and more than that is questionable in 4k shooting.

There's compromises in everything so it's all upto personal preference an "backup" for cooling down sensors for Sony.

Just think the A7 series with G master 24-70 is longer than a 5dmk3 w/ 24-70Lmk2 so small form factor is destroyed with the huge G master lens.

I say...use your gear and at the end of the day enjoy your results whatever you shoot with. This is as long as it meets your needs.

Yes it will compare.

I shot a 5D mk3 and switched to the a7ii and 24-70/4. The new GM lens is getting unreal reviews as the sharpest 24-70 available. I've switched to the a6300 and lost nothing but gained 4k and 120p in 1080 along w/ better focusing. Some will say I lost IBIS, but that was not relevant for what I shoot.

Honestly the high ISO performance in the new a6300 sensor is so good that it's probably closer to the 6D than most people think. It's sensor design is related to the BSI design in the a7rII, and has a similar signal gain that both the a7rII and a7s/II have at higher ISO's. Plus more base ISO DR in the Sony exmor sensor. Actually...probably more DR throughout the entire ISO range.

That and the 24-70GM seems to be the best 24-70 on the market right now.

It's a solid camera, but it's not that close to the 6D. (external link)
