So pretty much like the title says. After reading alot of post and watching some YouTube videos I'm curious to find out what would be the ideal walk around lens for my T4i. I like the idea of the 24-70 or 24-105 range. I seen people loving the Sigma 18-35 f1.8 as it complements the APS-C but I would like a little more range. Thanks for reading.

What do you shoot, specifically?

I would look at a 17-50 F2.8 flavor zoom for general walk around on APS-C.

But, again, it really depends on what you shoot.

I also just like to walk around with a single prime (like a pancake).

It's all about what you do though.

Very best,

What lens (or lenses) do you have now? What sort of photography do you do or want to do? What limitation(s) do you find with your current lens(es)?

I personally would not be happy with any 24-XX zoom on a 1.6X sensor because the lens would lack the entire wide angle range. At a minimum, I would feel it necessary to carry along an additional wide angle to compliment such a lens.

But that's me.

If you do think you might want a wide angle on your walkaround lens, then my suggestions would include choices like the Canon EF-S 15-85 IS and the Canon EF-S 18-135 STM. Both of these lenses give you that long reach you wanted, but they also have a wide angle. The only downside is that they both have rather slow maximum apertures (f/5.6 on the long end).

I use a Canon 5DIII and a Sony A7rIII

The 24mm on the wide end of what you suggest is limiting for a crop format. Strive for something in the 17mm range. I personally love my Sigma 17-50 2.8. Very versatile. There is also a 17-70mm dock compatible lens but it is a variable f/stop design.

If you want speed (f2.8) then any of the 17-50's are good (well canons is 17-55).

If you want more range but don't mind slower speed and variable aperture then the sigma 17-70, canon 15-85, or canon 18-135 are all great choices.

All depends on what you're looking for out of a lens.

Thanks guys for the comments. I mainly take pictures of my kids who are always moving.!! I have a trip coming up in Sept to Disneyworld with at least 16 of us. So having something with wider apature for night time would be ideal to capture great pics. I heard the Sigma will be coming out with a newer lens like the 18-35 but with more range.

What lens do you already have? The kit 18-55mm STM is excellent. With a crop body you are better off with a lens that is designed for a crop body.

I really find the 24-105 to be a great, general purpose lens for all of my crop bodies. Like you stated, I like a little more range for general walking around; the 18-35 is a wonderful lens (I have that one, too) but I only find myself pulling it out if I need the extra speed of the 1.8 or if I want wide without going ultra-wide.

I use the 24-105 on crop but I also have a 17-50/2.8 OS. The 17-50 tends to get used more indoors and the 24-105 outside. I think the 18-35/1.8 would pair well with the 24-105, but I don't want to give up the OS for video.

I wanted a weather sealed lens to pair with my 7D for skiing and snow action shots. If you don't have a weather sealed body, then the 18-135 STM or USM would make more sense today as those didn't exist when I bought the 24-105. The 15-85 needs to be a consideration too.

So the 24-105 acts more like a 38-168?? Is it still pretty sharp.

I would say it's pretty even with the 15-85 and the two newer 18-135s. My 17-50 is sharper in the center and the 18-35 would be a good deal sharper. Also the 17-55 is going to be a little sharper and overall pretty even with the 17-50 OS.

And don't be confused by the EF EF-S thing focal length is focal length. If you are trying to convert to full frame thoughts the. You need to multiply but lenses numbers by 1.6 so while the 24-105 give the field of view of a 38-168, the 18-135 gives the field of view of a 29-216 on a full frame camera.

If you have never used a full frame or film camera and have only ever used crop cameras, forget the multiply thing.

Actual measurements by photozone.de show the 18-55mm STM to be much sharper than the 15-85mm, in the center, but even more dramatically at the border. Contrary to the high opinions of the 15-85mm when first released, it is unfortunately not a very sharp lens... too bad because it has such a nice zoom range.

The very expensive 17-55mm/2.8 is known to show inconsistent autofocus at long range (typical outdoor situations). It is decent for sharpness, but the humble 18-55mm STM beats it, according to data from photozone.de, and my own experience with these lenses confirms it.
