Hi all,

Any recommendations for an inexpensive wide angle zoom in the 17-35mm (or close) range? The lens will be used for real estate listings and I'd like to keep the price point under $500 if at all possible. Also open to third party lenses as well.

Thanks!

Tokina makes an AT-X 17-35/4 FX lens that sells for about $450. I haven't used it, but other modern Tokina I have used have been excellent lenses.

It's more than you want to spend, but the Canon EF 16-35/4L IS USM has gotten a lot of very positive reviews. It's near the top of my wish list.

Even though I'm using the 16-36 f/4 IS on a 1D IV, I find it to be a very nice lens. The 17-40 is really the only other Canon option and they retail for $750 but show up used for somewhere near $500. I don't know your location. If you live in the States, a 17-40 f/4 IS refurb is $570 and the 16-35 f/4 IS refurb is $747.32 at present.

Thanks all! These couple of lenses are a good starting point for my search. BTW, I'm in Chicago. Is there a reason my location is not showing in posts?

Edit: Location is showing in reply. Weird.

Tamron 17-35. It's cheaper than a 17-40L and performs basically the same. Usually $250~300 tops. Or, a 17-40L, usually $350~450.

Very best,

What are the general thoughts on the Tokina 17-35mm? Seeing them on Ebay for $350 ish.

The Tamron is the one you'd want. Handles flare like the 17-40. It's optics are about as good as the 17-40. The Tokina has typical Tokina issues (flare).

Look at Flickr Pool Tamron 17-35 and see for yourself. It's one of the best inexpensive ultrawide zooms that compares to the 17-40.

Very best,

I would look at the least expensive lens. The Tamron will give you adequate photos for real-estate shots. Keep in mind, real-estate photos are not like some sort of "art photos" they will be processed and put either on a website, or in cheaply printed booklets. Also, keep in mind most realtors will use point and shoot for their MLS shots, and be perfectly happy with the quality. If your client wants better, go for the Canon EF 16-35 f2.8L and take it off your taxes for the business.

Eventhough I added the new improved 16-35 f/4 L IS, I still have my smaller lighter 17-40 f/4 L. Why? A great back up when needed. And the resale price is very low, it's worth keeping. Plus it really is a nice lens.
Look for a used copy in you price range or s ave the additional dollars for a new one.

Is flare really an issue for this type of shooting? I have always recommended the 17-40 to folks for landscapes, but the Tokina might work for indoors (although bright sources of light could still be an issue). Lots of people really like it.

Flare is not an issue at all. Lens would be used for indoor shots with bounce flash, and just a few exterior shots with available light. I'm leaning towards the Tamron 17-35mm which I've been seeing on eBay for under $300.
