Arrive to clients home and realize that the battery had drained overnight. Thanks god I had a 1100D as a backup. Customer doesn't want to shoot indoors as it is sunny outside. I explain that the sun is too high, and that the light is not the best. I told them that we could re-schedule for later on the same day, but to no avail. I think to myself that i can anyway edit the RAW files later on and that I should be ok. That is, of course, if the latest using the 1100D (My lovely wife) hadn't set up the camera to JPEG (of course, I do not realize of that until I get home). It is totally my fault for not checking, so I am going to give the customers a discount and another chance at no charge another time. I am going to send them the photos later on.

What do you guys think?

If I'm understanding things correctly, the camera was set to JPG and no RAW files were shot?

You can still do a lot with JPGs. Just save the unedited JPGs as TIFFs and work on the TIFFs. You won't be able to recover the highlights (I see a few places where they look like they might be blown), but you'll still be able to do a lot with the files. Give it a shot and see what you can do.

I was shooting in the same conditions here in Calgary yesterday, and it was maddening. I could not coax the child into the shade of the trees.

If the customer finds the deliverables objectionable, I think you should offer a reshoot: providing they were willing to follow your advice with regards to where and when you were comfortable shooting. I do not think you should discount.

Hmm. Battery drained overnight? It sounds like you have a 6D and left the GPS on (I've done that a few times).

Huge tip on the TIFFs! I always shoot RAW, so never thought of it. Yes, the camera was set on JPEG. Sorry for not being clear. I don't know if they sill find them objectionable this ones. Will send them later on today. Would you guys be happy with something like this?

Thanks!

Would I be happy with them? It is kind of a mixed bag. I don't like the shadows on the faces in photos 1 and 2, and those are impossible for me to fix in post (maybe someone with more skill then I have could do it). But, you can use the shadows as a way to reinforce your point that if they wanted your best work they should have heeded your warnings about the sun.

I think #1 is cute. I don't like where the strap on her bag is laying on her arm, but I think the photo is workable.

I do really like #2. It is a shame about the shadows on the faces. I'd do some work on the background to make the features in it less obvious.

I'm not excited about #3. I think it is workable, but I'm not totally sure what I would do with it.

I don't like #4. The little girl's head and neck position kind of remind me of E.T.

I love #5.

I think for all of these I'd work on them in two layers with masking: one for the girls and one for the background.

The JPG to TIFF tip comes from my first Photoshop instructor (Paul Coates). There is nothing that can be done about the data that the camera threw out in the conversion, but at least the photos can be edited without further data loss

Never thougth of ET myself. Now that you mentioned it, I cannot un-see it!

No. 5 is my favourite too. Will definitely work on the background of no. 2

Really thanks for the feedback
