I don't know if this is "by design", something in my setup or an incomplete understanding of how to use the feature, but;

When traversing a thread's unseen content if I want to say like a post, then I am generally bounced out of the traverse function and the page scrolled to the top, I have to manually scroll down to find the message I wanted to like.

Then to resume the traverse I have to refresh the page to get the travers unseen menu item to show again, plus as the window is then scrolled to the current unseen item, I then have to go to the top to once again to activate traverse unseen.

It would be a smoother user experience if one or more of the below behaviours could be achieved:

a) the page scroll to not change when clicking thread items
b) the like click etc to be honoured.
c) if possible to remain in or easily resume traverse from the current or next unseen without the extra steps of refresh etc.

So although it is very cool to be able to easily find and catch up with missed content, I can't easily use the content I find.

.

These are great suggestions that you make, Lester. I don't think that the mode one is inshoould have an effect on how the site operates; in other words, likes and so forth should work exactly the same whether one is in "unseen" mode or not.

By the way, is there anywhere on POTN where the "Traverse Unseen" mode is explained thoroughly? I actually don't know what it is. I have asked for it to be explained before, but no one ever responded to my request. I keep seeing "Traverse Unseen" at the top of the page when I am on POTN, but before I click on it I want to know exactly what it is and what all it does.

.

"Your" and "you're" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"They're", "their", and "there" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one.
"Fare" and "fair" are different words with completely different meanings - please use the correct one. The proper expression is "moot point", NOT "mute point".

It does just "what its says on the tin" TBH Tom, if you have not seen some material on a thread for some reason, perhaps you joined a thread part way through or skipped over some posts when looking at the latest posts (this is mostly what happens to me) the feature will take you through the missed posts.

I am sure Pekka did explain it in the early days, not sure where.

I guess the system must decide if you have seen a post based on if it has been displayed on your screen (not sure if the logic is top, bottom or all of post), it then loops through each unseen posts.

It is great for reading, but if you wish to interact with the thread you are bumped back into the ordinary mode.

I don't know if it is possible to improve, Pekka has already done amazing things with AMASS but it may be too difficult to change, I know nothing about that sort of coding so I cannot begin to guess what the issues may be. I just make a suggestion.

That like behaviour is a bug that is fixed in next version. All post commands should be usable while traversing, if not: it is a bug.

You'll get unseen posts
- when you have followed a thread, then got some notifications and cleared the notifications without viewing the posts.
- when you start follow a thread from other than the last page of the thread: in that case all the posts after the page you hit the follow command will be "unseen".

Unseen posts are marked as seen per post using a graphical method which checks that you really have seen most of the post: you must scroll past a certain amount of the post before it is removed from unseen list. This calculation takes account of viewer's browser width, font-sizes etc.

Thanks for the comments - anything can be coded as long as what is needed can be explained in plain English :) And I'm sure improvements to unseen system will come some day.

Oh, I think I understand now. So it is thread specific? I hadn't realized that. I wondered why at times it says "Traverse Unseen" atop my screen, and at other times I don't see it there. I thank you for your explanation.

I had assumed that it was something similar to Flickr's "Explore" or "Explored" or whatever it is they call it. Now I know that it is not similar to that at all. Thank you for the clarification. "What it says on the tin" didn't work for me, because I never saw a "tin" that explained that it was thread specific and not forum-wide. I guess I am the type of person that has to be told every little thing; I'm not really someone who excels at "just figuring it out".
