So was going to get a zoom with some IS. I really like the size of the 24-70 f4, upgraded and quiet IS and macro feature. Was all set to buy it, until someone pointed out that the lights in the bokeh are lemon shaped. I watched a few videos and googled for pics and sure enough. I have no idea why, but it'sa real turn off. Im temped to go with the sigma 24-105 just because of the lemons, but that thing is long and heavy. On the other hand, he bokeh looks much better. Im really torn here. Am I over analyzing

i've heard of onion bokeh, but not lemon.

i suppose if we put together enough "questionable" lenses we might come up with a full meal. or at least a light sauce for a bowl of pasta primavera.

throw in some oil from a Nikon body and we can start talking about salad.

ha! ok ok. The lights I was looking at were yellow and it reminded me of a lemon shape. I suppose onion works too.

are you talking about the outside profile of a lemon?

something like an American football, Australian football, or Rugby ball?

gotcha, onion bokeh is when the outer most portion of a OOF small specular highlight has a ring around it. Often the inner portions might have rings too.

I have seen football shaped bokeh on small lights, but they are off to the left and right of center frame, not directly in the middle.

for instance, left of the dog = round; right of my son = football

little bit of onion, neither bother me at all in this pic, or the rest of this series.

Bokeh "circles" at frame edges or corners are lemon shaped because of this physical reason:

I may be a bit strange, but I've always paid more attention to the in-focus parts of a photograph.

So I'm less strange, while paying more attention to the out-of-focus parts or bokeh :D
For infocus parts, all I want is sharp e n o u g h image. No pixel peeping, no matter if lens is capable for 40 or 45lpmm sharpness - they both have enough sharpness. Bokeh makes the mood for photographs! :)

I've known about the different shapes of blurred highlights for a while now, but never really thought about why it's the case. It's so simple, you just blew my mind.
