I'm thinking of picking up a Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM for my seven-year-old son to use on his T1i. Is it a relatively frustration free lens?

Yes. For the money it is also an excellent crop sensor zoom.

yea I just got one yesterday refurb from canon for $129
I will say its a very nice lens. its nice and sharp and focus is very fast. I bought it mainly because alot of times my 150-600 is just overkill at my sons soccer games as I am only in the 200-280 range anyway. I thought of the 70-200f4 again but I just sold one and if I dont use this lens much for $129 its not a big deal if it sits.
