Is there a setting I can change so I can take pictures more rapidly when using live view?

What AF mode are you using?
This page (external link) shows the timings for PDAF, CDAF and manual (prefocused) and PD AF needs to bring the mirror down and up before exposure so it's slow.

My 6D shoots still frames in LV just as fast as it does using the VF. Set lens to Manual Focus, Drive to HS Burst, Engage LV, and press the shutter. It doesn't get much easier than that.

Thank you very much, Kim. Last final exam: 3/29. Last clinical: 4/15. Pinning (a nursing thing) was 4/30. Graduation was yesterday (5/10). All I have left to do is take my state boards (NCLEX). It has been a long, long road. I could not have done it without my wife pulling me (she finished RN program in 8/2014), and lots of my classmates (most of whom are about 1/3 my age) pushing me. I plan to take most of the summer off, and get back to work around 8/1.

Nursing (BSRN) school is said to be THE hardest undergraduate curriculum going. No argument from me. I got a BS Chemistry degree 35 year ago. Piece of cake compared to this. I did my Basic Combat Training in '74 (remember Viet Nam?) in the middle of a war. BCT has absolutely nothing on a nursing program. Nursing school was the hardest thing I've ever done. I loved it. Can't wait to get started.

Congrats, again. I do remember Vietnam. I graduated from HS in '71. I was in that lottery system back then (my number: 148). I wasn't drafted but did spend a couple years doing volunteer work in Indonesia right after HS.

Nursing is tough but honest work. I know you'll be an asset where ever you end up working.

MF-only lens.
It will keep shooting rapidly if I hold the button, but if I take just 1 picture and then release shutter and want to take another, there's a long delay.

I don't think there's a lot you can do about this unless you went with a mirrorless camera. MF lens helps speed it up a little.

If you're familiar with Magic Lantern there's an option for "silent shooting" which effectively just captures the live view to an image rather than flipping the mirror and taking the shot. It's a little quicker, you can burst 30 frames in less than a second, but for single shots it's really not much faster AND the images are only half(?) resolution of what you normally get by pressing the shutter. You can choose DNG which is nice though.

Edit: There's an option for full-res but it's experimental and I haven't been able to make it work.

I have ML, but I won't sacrifice quality.
Thanks for all the info.

My 6D does exactly the same thing, so I suppose it is designed that way. You are really bucking the function of LV & AF, here. Why the need to stay in LV? Your camera is easily capable of rapid single-fire shooting if you shut off the LV.

For magnified focusing, because it's an MF lens.

Have you tried a split-prism focusing screen? The 6D's screen is interchangeable.

I can't shim it, I have to REMOVE a shim and I can't figure out how to do that safely?

I did look at your signature. I only got as far as the first 3 or 4 manual lenses. :) Sorry.

I don't understand 'shimming'. The 6D split focus screen should be a drop-in. What is the issue that causes shimming to be necessary?

EDIT:
I guess Canon does not make a split prism for the 6D. Looks like the best you can do is Eg-S. Is that what you are using?

No, I have a custom split-prism screen. They use the Eg-S though, I believe.
I thought even the Canon screens came with shims, though?

Anyway, you have to add (or in my case, remove) shims so that the split lines up when things are actually in focus. (the focusing screen moves closer to / further away from the ....mirror?)
When things are properly focused, my lines are still slightly wrong.
