I understand I would use an intervalometer for time lapse, but what about the battery?

The camera doesn't turn itself off between shots, does it?
So, if I want 12-hour time lapse, I'll have to power it by....? bringing extra batteries and hope I don't move anything when I swap them?

You'll need an external power supply. Normally connected via a dummy battery in the battery compartment.

What supply do most people use along with the dummy?

It depends on a lot of factors, temperature, how many shots you're going to take over 12 hours, how many times the battery has been charged, etc. You could always setup your camera in your house and do a test to see how long until the battery dies taking pictures at the intended interval.

If you have access to mains power grab an adapter kit: http://www.bhphotovideo.com …CK_E6_AC_Adapter_Kit.html (external link) (find one for whatever model camera you are using of course). A lot cheaper on ebay if you want the knock-off versions (never had an issue personally).

You could also try a battery grip with the insert that has space for two standard battery packs.

You can google "how to take a timelapse (insert whatever camera you have)" and you should find lots of resources that cover the basics.

Good idea on battery grip.. I have one ordered, and I have 3 OEM batteries. ;)
