Would you stick with the latest Win 10 driver for Intel 750 PCIe SSD or update to Intels latest.?

I heard a rumour that they run a lot faster with Intel's own Driver, than the latest Win 10 driver.
Hence wondered if its good to do?

I also noticed on Intels site that there is a firmware update utility - and wondered should that be done before updating the driver ?
(TBH I am terrified of Firmware updates! after the Supermicro MB bios/me firmware saga! , which I think is solved - will know today )
Is a firmware update for a PCIe SSD very important ? And as problematic as say a Motherboard ME Firmware update?

Finally a couple of general knowledge ?s
1. When one updates say a GPU driver or an SSD driver, if the update goes wrong will a fresh reinstall of Windows 10 put it all back to standard or does it mess up the Bios? I.e. Are these drivers all in Windows, and I assume a new fresh install of Windows replaces all the registry entries etc.?

2. If I do the Intel SSD driver update, and Windows 10 sees a new driver if auto update is on, will it overwrite the Intel driver or does it only overwrite standard Windows drivers?

The PC-specific forums will have a lot more informed posters.

I believe if you use Intel's site, it will prompt you to choose an OS, which will at least indicate if Intel thinks the driver will work under Win X.

You might also run Driver Booster 3 to see what it thinks. It won't automatically load the driver, but it may give you a data point.

I would update the driver and check to see that the latest Firmware was also installed....
But before making any changes I would make sure I had everything backed up...
I do not have an Intel 750 SSD, but I have had multiple experiences with Samsung Pro 850. and 950
On one occasion I had a problem where the USB Mass Storage driver got crushed by the Samsung
Clone software. It took me a while to figure it out, but the problem was resolved without major drama.

Back up your system before making any Firmware or Driver changes.

Hope this helps,

Thanks, all data is still on the Laptop.
It seemed to update the NVMe storage controller, and 3 firmware items. All Seems stable :)
And seems to run faster.

I made a few firmware updates with an other (smaller) Intel SSDs on my laptop. They provide a nice little utility that makes it quite painless and easy. Can not comment on the importance of your update though. Try to find the changelog and see if anything relevant was updated. I tend to update essential computer components (such as firmware and driver) after they came out for 2 - 3 months and usually after checking for problems on the internet.

I Too like to do that, I think the Intel update was april the 16th. So hope if there were problems it would have been fixed by now. Or at least problems would have been posted to the net.

Windows drivers are usually a basic driver that will allow hardware to function, drivers supplied by the hardware manufacturer will allow for full functionality and optimized performance.

Firmware updates can be anything from bug fixes to performance enhancements. Supplied notes do not always disclose everything that was changed with the firmware. Any time you upgrade firmware there is a risk that it will fail and that piece of hardware will no longer function, the risk is really small but it does exist.

I avoid beta drivers and firmware, but usually do update to the latest official releases.

If installing a driver causes system problems you can use Recovery in the Control Panel to have Windows go back to a point before the driver was installed. Usually installing a new driver or update will automatically create a restore point before the installation. You can also create a restore point manually before making updates or installing new software just to be on the safe side.

Thanks Dave,
I updated it and the firmware and can see a visible speed difference and time to boot. Worth doing. :):)
I do have a little 1000w UPS - so I can rely on power being there.

I used the Intel Update manager for firm ware and it went off and found 3 things needing firmware update, knowing nothing I accepted them all and they all work and say are running properly in Device Manager.

Macrium Reflect free is a good way to back up a system before trying new drivers. It's pretty heavyweight as you can often roll back, but it's good to be safe. This would avoid you having to start a new thread for every tiny change you're thinking of making to your computer. Have you heard of Hard Forum (external link)? Lots of people interested in the fine details of computers hang out there.
