I import my images into LR with the custom name of File Name 7DII. So i have 9999 images named in sequence IMG_0001 7DII all the way through IMG_9999 7DII .

My camera took it's 10000 picture and started numbering images over again with IMG 0001. Is there a way to rename the image to add a "1" before the file number. I'd like the file name of image 10001 to import in as IMG 10001_7DII instead of IMG_0001 7DII.

I know I could renumber them individually but that does not make sense after a shoot of 1400 images. I need to renumber on import.

Thousand hanks.

In case nobody else can offer an in-LR solution, renaming 1400 files on the SD/CF card with IrfanView (or some other renaming tool) is a matter of seconds.
Still not ideal, as you'll have to think about it every time you import, but at least it's quick.

You can set the 7D2 to use whatever prefix you like, in the camera menu. Change IMG_ to IM_1 or whatever suits you. I had mine set for M2_A, and when it rolled over, to M2_B, etc.

By the way, there is no IMG_0000. Canon cheats us out of one shot out of every 9999.

I don't know about LR, but it's a piece of cake in the Photo Downloader thru Bridge.

I don't understand the need for 10,000+ distinct names. Names only matter in the same subdirectory/folder. I've probably got 10+ of at least 100 different, exact-same file names. TAS_0001.jpg - 10 copies. 1234.cr2 - 10 copies. Carter_football.0030 - 10 copies. This has never caused me a problem.

Fine, but it is not a problem to have all unique names, it is easy to do, and it can save confusion at times when looking for a file.

Granted. I don't bother because it is an extra step, no matter how you do it, that offers me no benefit.

If looking for a file is the issue, I think keywords would be a better alternative. Gotta do, what works for you, in the end.

Anyway, I would do it in the camera if the model has that provision. It might be possible to do in LR, but LR's file renaming function is complicated and sometimes makes gross mistakes when I use it.

Try changing your Custom file renaming in the Import dialog, using the following:

IMG_1(Filename Number Suffix)_7DII

You're shoehorning that leading 1 in there yourself. When you reach 20,000 shots, you'll need to update it again.

This won't work well during the shoot where you roll over from 9999 to 10000, or from 19999 to 20000. You'll have to import in two batches, stopping at image 9999, changing the Custom renaming before importing shot 10000+.

Nathancarter's recommendation is perfect to bring in my current import. That will work even better. Thanks to POTN community.

Lightroom's import screen allows you to rename files during import. It also allows you to save settings as an import preset to be reused. You can have multiple import presets for different cameras or differnt types of shooting.

I have it set to change files names to a prefix followed by YYYY-MM-DD followed by the original file name. Example: IM852-2016-06-13-9032.CR2 All I do it select the preset during import and the files are automatically renamed. The preset also creates a dated folder, copies the images into it, make a back-up copy to another location, sets the colour to Green and adds a "To Do" keyword.

Good advice. I have several different import presets, that all follow my consistent standard.

My file naming convention is (Custom Text)_(YYYYMMDD)_(Filename number suffix).dng

The Custom Text is a prompt in the Renaming pane of the Import dialog. When I start the Import, I type in a meaningful word or phrase, such as "Dragoncon" or "Carter_Family_Christmas." That way, by simply looking at the filename, I know the context of the image and when it was taken.

I also use a meaningful folder hierarchy layout, though my Import presets just make a new folder in my "Current Work" folder - again, with a prompt for the folder name. The filed only go into the folder hierarchy once I'm done processing & delivering them.

I really need to use that "Make a backup copy" option. I'm starting to get really paranoid about my backups.
