Knowing that people frequently use Paypal I thought it would be a good idea to share this item I received in the mail. Some may already know about it but I dang near went to far with it and gave them my credentials to my paypal account....

Had an email from Paypal stating that my account had been put on "hold" until I get back with them.....it has a link that goes to a page, that if you didn't pay close attention to it looks like the real thing. Anyway, when it came up my log in credentials for paypal did not enter into the appropriate boxes....got me thinking then I explored their site further....good thing I didn't give my password out, they would of created havoc with my account. The thing that sold me was the address...it was not to paypal. When I do go to Paypal on my own accord their is nothing mentioning a "hold" on my account.

Man these guys can come at you so many ways...

this is my case number...it takes you to their page on the email I received http://****/sf94LZ (external link)

here is their email acc@limited.com

more reason to keep your guard up!

This happens pretty often.
But I have heard of this SCAM before.
If you look at the sending e-mail address, it is generally not from Paypal.
Just report it is a phishing scam to your mail provider.

Yes, that is a very old trick. Paypal, years back. sent out updates stating they, like many other financially-minded sites, will stop sending links in their emails. They will instead instruct you to log in yourself and go to your message portal, etc. This is one tried and true method for any email you get.

If an email purports to be from some site upon which you have an account, never click on any link supplied in the email, and instead log onto that site in a different tab, to validate the email.

As TeamSpeed said above, the simple way to avoid this old phishing scam is to never ever click on a link in an email and log in. Just simply go to the website via your address bar and login from there.

Cheers,

Yep. Seen it before. I closed my e-mail, logged onto my real Paypal. No issues. They did ask me to forward the email to them.

Ive seen tons of these. I usually make up some name and password like "Nolife@scams.com" with a password like "stilllivingatmomsbasement" and see what happens. 99% of the time, it lets me log in and some nigerian prince gave me $1million.

You actually click the link? I can't remember the last time I've had the nerve to click a link in an e-mail from my "financial institution."

Many browsers resolve the link to a readable reveal of its full destination web address. Chrome puts it at the bottom left of the browser window, allowing you to determine if link looks like phishing or it might come from a trusted source. I always look at the resolved address of links, to determine if an email is legit.
In any event, it is always better to manually enter your financial institution's KNOWN (to you) web address, rather than clicking on the link, unless the email was just sent to you immediately upon YOUR REQUEST to the financial institution (to reset passwords, change profile information)

Considering the amount of Ransom Ware sites out there, I wouldn't consider visiting these sites.

Wouldn't be too hard to install a ransom ware trojan during the site page set up.

Phishing is pretty commonplace. It actually works, though... Got one for the business last week which said a PayPal transaction had been rejected for "your safety" which prompted a call from my partner asking if he should click it. (um, no) AMEX scams and BofA are very well formatted though; they look like the real deal but for the low-res graphics which leave the logos just off a bit. My ex wife had her hard drive encrypted, lost everything. Now that happened because she got an offer for some "free" anti-virus software optional with a "free" copy of Lightroom.

What would you suggest for a Apple I-Mac Mid 2011?

I got such an e-mail myself. Since I don't have a pay-pal account, I could delete it.

Best advice, as mentioned above, is to go to the Paypal web site that you type (not the link in the e-mail), and check there.

One reason im scared to use PayPal again :/ Yes agree with moose. You need to run your AntiVirus for malware and trojan. Well your AntiVirus should be on at all times no matter what. Your email should have sent that email to junk folder.

I'm not sure what OS versions are supported, but check out Malwarebytes.
