Ok so I have not used my camera much (not for the last 5months) for certain reasons but anyway im back at it. I need lenses as I do not have really any good glass..

now with that I have had my wants on
Sigma 18-35 f1.8
70-200 2.8 IS ( either canon mark i or tamron )

now I see that Sigma makes a 50-100 f1.8 but do not see any reference when I search...

so does anyone have one of these bad boys? would it work well for indoor volleyball?

The 50-100 is still very new so there hasn't been too much on it as of yet.

Here is the only discussion on here that I have seen about it.

https://photography-on-the.net …/showthread.php?t=1457662

If 100mm is long enough then I'd think that it would be a very good lens for indoor volleyball. Though that's purely speculative on my part as I do not, and probably never will, own the 50-100.

Thanks for the reply. Well I know 85mm on a crop is too much and I used a 70-200 f4 (alli could borrow) and I had to stand so far away... I think the 24-70 2.8 would be a good choice but the 50-100 looked interesting @ f1.8

hmmm will see.. but this lens will only be in my bag once I get the 70-200 2.8 is and 18-35 1.8 first in that order...

Take this with a grain of salt, but the one thing I always start to worry about with generation old lenses is that the manufacturer will stop supporting/repairing them after a given amount of time. II think the version 2 of the 70-200 has been out for 6 years already and Cano supports lenses for I think something like 8 years after they are obsoleted. I had a very good copy that had ben calibrated by Canon during a minor repair but still sold it and paid the extra for the upgrade to the Mark II. Not disappointed in the least.

Anyway, just something to think about. As far as third party, I'm not sure how the sigma stacks up, but their lens dock and compatible lenses can offer quite a bit in versatility.

Canon seems to support lenses much, much longer than they do bodies. I only know of a few lenses Canon no longer services, out of the myriad of EF options, several that are older than 8 years. But it is good advice to simply be aware that if you buy old lenses or hold onto old lenses, you will indeed eventually hit a period where it won't be serviceable by Canon. :)

Other manufacturers follow a somewhat similar stance.

The 50-100 1.8 lens should be amazing on a crop body though, you basically are getting back some of that FF goodness/DOF/subject isolation with that focal lens and aperture. Not sure if it is worth the price however, because you can get 2 f1.8 primes for less money than that lens.

If it was a 50-125/135 lens at f1.8, then it would get more of my attention. A 50-125 f1.8 lens on a crop body would be very nearly equivalent to a 70-200 2.8 on a FF.

the 18-35 is amaZAHzing! just order the Sigma Dock and spend some time dialing it in. It's a super sharp lens and well-built!
I also have the Sigma 70-200 and it's my second favorite lens! I shoot all of my events with this pair

I have the Tamron 70-200 and it's fantastic. I couldn't say one way or the other about using it for indoor volleyball, but my guess is that it'll be fine. I've shot youth baseball with my Tamron and it's got enough reach to cover the entire infield (with a bit of cropping).

only problem with 70-200 ois that on my crop when i used my borrowed 70-200 it was too much zoom!!!! needed something shorter...

Is 50mm short enough then? if it is then is 100mm long enough? If it is then the 50-100 might be a good option. If not then maybe a 50-150mm f2.8?

Yeah......the 70-200/2.8 is just about perfect for basketball and volleyball on a FF body, but it's too long for 1.6X.

I'd think this new 50-100 would be a very good option. What needs to be seen is if the AF system performance is up to the task of sports (I assume it is, but I have not seen any first hand usage reports). Given that, the focal length range and speed would seem to be just what 1.6X sports shooters are looking for.

I'm with Team Speed, I would much rather have seen a 50-135 f/2 OS Sport. Or even a sport version of the old 50-150 f/2.8. I seem to find myself using 100 to 135 quite a bit on my zooms that cover that range.

I sold my 70-200 2.8 for this all-in-one prime zoom! ZERO regrets
