I'm looking for ideas to make a semi-permanent pod mount for my balcony. A mount that typically remains but can be removed if needed. I will be doing a lot of sunset shooting from the balcony and prefer not to get the tripod out each time. I use RRS support if it matters.

Attached is a cell picture of the balcony railing & also a cell pic of the view from the balcony.

I'm going to look into the Gorillapod to start. Thanks for any suggestions.

Check out your local hardware store, Lowes or Home Depot for clamps. There are many on the market covering a variety of sizes and strengths - that might be a good start.

I suggest that you include a safety chain, too.

That was my first thought.

Aside from that, and aside from the traffic, that's one of my favorite cities...

I'd say super clamp (external link) on the round railing (if it fits, can't tell from here) with the ball head of your choice or go magic arm (external link) for more camera placement flexibility. A super clamp plus magic arm is what is typically used to mount remote cameras on basketball hoop standards, etc. And yes, be sure to use a safety cable (external link).

Absolutely - goes without saying .

The only other thing which may or may not be an issue is some building rules don't permit balcony attachments. It may be something to look into before investing in equipment.

Thanks for all the ideas. The super clamp appears to be exactly what I need! This will definitely be more practical than the tripod. And it installs to the rail in seconds!

That view looks familiar! It's got a lovely vantage point :) You'll have to invite me over for shots :P
