I don't mind a banded water snake or two, but the Mocassin around my pond causes me
to be a little concerned when the kids are around. Now it appears. I may end up with more than two.

In the second photo I guess I got too close. I don't thank that stare was of a friendly nature.

BTW I grabbed a Panasonic FZ1000 off the counter. So no Canon for these shots.

Nice find, but those look like nonvenomous water snakes to me.

I agree. It looks too skinny to be a Water Moccasin. The head is too small, too. WM's have a 'neck'. This thing may scare the pants off your kids, but I don't think it is venomous.

Well I happily stand corrected! Thanks much for the catch. They look pretty thick to me but based on the website I think you're right.

Don't give me any credit. I didn't know one from the other until I looked it up. :)

Yeah, looking on my computer right now, and those are water snakes. They can still have a nasty disposition, but at least they aren't venomous.

Check out this funny youtube video of Cottonmouths

i've never seen a snake marked like the red one. the second picture makes me think those are some type of water snake. i can't see pits and i think cotton mouths don't have round pupils (not 100 percent on that, though).

I thank you for not killing them! I see far too many dead snakes on the forums I frequent. Some are indeed venomous, others misidentified harmless species. In all cases, the snakes could simply be caught and released elsewhere, should the property owner not want venomous species around their children (understandable).

At any rate, cool photos of those water snakes!
