5DIII owners who use 3rd party lenses

How do you all have your AF system set up? I use the gear in my signature and have my AF set up to see available focus points when I press the AF button. With it set up this way, I get all sorts of blinking AF points telling me they are not cross type (I think that's what it means). Anyone know if there is a way to turn off the blinkies or is it just something to deal with?

I don't know of any AF mode that shows you available points for a given lens? It sounds like you are simply setting up the camera for all AF point focusing, and it is focusing each time using different points. Is that the case here? Have you consulted the owners manual for the different AF modes?

It's not that I want/need it to show available AF points on an individual lens basis (though that would be pretty slick), I just can't stand the blinking AF points and wish I could turn the blinkies off.

I have a 5D3 as well, but I never use all AF points mode, I always use one point, or one point with assist points turned on. If I have time later today, I will set it to all AF points (which never gave me good results in the past) to see what blinks and what doesn't, and what it means.

I as well use the single point or sometimes the assist points. It is when I want to select a new focus point and I press the rear button to do so, all potential AF points show up. The cross type ones are solid red, and the horizontal type ones are the blinkies.

I guess the reason I never see that is I never hit the AF selection button to see all the AF points so I can change my AF point. I simply just move the AF point around using the joystick.

I am looking at the manual, and it seems that since you have different options with different AF points, they decided on the blinking LCD boxes. Look at page 98+ to see if that will help. You can turn on only cross-type AF points and turn off the others. Perhaps that will help?

It is one of those things that I don't obsess about, but would like to be able to customize if possible.

I know exactly what you mean. I think you have to deal with it. You can see all the AF points in the VF or turn them off and only see the active point(s) which I do. However, even with Canon lenses (e.g. the 135L) and whatever the display option you have, the non X-type flash when I press the AF point selection button if I have all AF points available.

I never use that button to actually change focus points, so it doesn't bug me - I only use it to change from single point to expansion etc... which is not as often.
