Don't know about faster shutter but your focus is spot on in that first one...judging by the brick pavement. Well done.

In the first picture you used 1/500 - so that ought to be fast enough, but you were also using the 200 mm lens, so that puts a bigger burden on you to be very steady.

I think that depending upon which effect you were trying to get, you may want to be panning more in the second shot, because there's nothing sharp in that picture - neither the background nor the bird.

BTW, there is no EXIF data with the second picture, so you probably used "Save for Web". That eliminates the EXIF data.

I agree with Meaty0 that the focus looks good in #1, but the bird is just not sharp.

Probably not as it was day one with my new lens and didnt concentrate on the 5d features.
