Why is it when someone replies to a person's post, sometimes it is shown as 'reply to post 12345678' and other times it is shown as 'reply to Username's post'?

I wish it could always show the Username, not a post number...

Just curious........

Thank you

I too would like the username every time, because the many-digit post number doesn't show on the post.

Possibly because you're the one doing the reply? I see "...a reply to OhLook's post" when I view this.

I also see my name there. The timestamp is "1 hour ago." Sometimes, I believe, the "as a reply to" line starts out with the number and switches to the name.

Funny thing, I thought I used the Reply button for Post #2, but "as a reply to . . ." isn't there at all.

If the replied to post is on another page, it is shown as a post number, else you get the name. This is just for resource saving reasons (minor, but still)

If you quote a post, reply info is not shown.

If you post to thread, reply info is not shown (you essentially reply to the first post in thread in this case).

When you submit a post, the new post has reply info like "3 sec. ago as a reply to post 123456", on a page refresh it is updated.

IMO, the reply should be same as "Post to thread" in fact "Post to thread" should be reply. The reply doesnt work when viewing via mobile and the fragmentation through different browsers is annoying to deal with. I'm a proponent of simpler design, quote should quote, reply should be blank. Simple.

Reply as it is, even if it works, is borderline useless. It provides nothing to the user or other users browsing.

It's useful for me. When someone comments about an image, for example, without saying whose image he or she is talking about, I don't know what to make of it.

I also now see reply to OhLook's post where initially I did not see that, but a number..... guess it takes a spell to settle in.

Quote serves the same purpose, but better and consistent. Reply simply isnt needed since it's inconsistent, which causes confusion. I'm no software developer, actually, I am :p, and I dont know about all concepts, but generally, having two separate functions reach the same conclusion doesnt sit well with me. I'm not the only one that's expressed said conclusion, browse this forum using your phone, it gets bad, and for that I tend to browse this mostly on desktop.

The post number does nothing for me, it's way too long to remember, and what's the point really? A return arrow link should suffice. It's like displaying a primary key in a database, the end user doesnt need to know about it.

FWIW the post number that appears when "Reply" is employed is clickable. One click takes you to the post that is being replied to.

That said, I rarely ever use "Reply" unless the post is immediately above my reply. If I wish to reply to a post on a previous page I use "Quote".
